Alabama Railroad Jobs

As with almost every other state the largest employers for Alabama railroad jobs are the large Class I railroads. However, the state also has its share of smaller railroads as well although it is usually much harder to find a position within these companies due to their small size. Along with Amtrak, four of the seven Class I railroad operate within Alabama's borders including BNSF Railway, Canadian National, CSX Transportation, and Norfolk Southern. These companies make up more than 70% of the state's rail network with shortlines and one regional making up the rest. If you are interested, to get an idea of how Alabama's railroad network is broken down please click here.

Of note, if you have very little knowledge about the railroad industry and your interest in a position includes transportation or maintenance (such as engineer, conductor, signal maintainer, etc.) the work can be very demanding and require numerous long hours away from home. This is especially true for Class I railroads as smaller regional and shortlines usually do not have the system size or customer demand. In any event, on Class Is it is not uncommon to work 12 hours for days and days. Despite the long hours the pay is excellent as are the benefits and retirement.

For more information about Alabama railroad jobs, the companies which operate in the state are included below with either appropriate contact information listed or their career/job websites. I receive a lot of e-mails about this so again, please let me stress that contacting me concerning job information is of little use because there is simply not a lot I can do to help. You will need to contact the individual railroad to see about job openings. Finally, if you are interested in working for one of the Class I railroads which operate in Alabama be aware that you probably will not work in the local area, or perhaps anywhere in the state for that matter as, they will place you wherever needed.
