Model Railroader is another magazine owned by Kalmbach Publishing and has been on newsstands every month since 1934. The magazine covers many areas of modeling, from featuring superb layouts to giving tips and reviews on a variety of different topics. If you are modeler and need advice, especially if you are new to the hobby and just getting started, “MR” would be a good pick. Information which can be found in Model Railroader includes some of the best custom-built layouts one can find anywhere (usually they depict some prototypical scene or railroad operation but not always), interesting and useful modeling projects, and finally information which can help you to build your own layouts and models (or upgrades those models you already own).
Here is a break down of what a typical magazine includes (by department):
* Workshop: Includes useful modeling tips and techniques and answers readers' mail
* Step-by-Step Projects: "How tos" on various layout projects
* Information desk: Useful information regarding actual railroad operations
* DCC Corner: Helpful Digital Command Control (DCC) information
* Trackside photos: Unique and interesting angles of highly detailed layouts
Over the years I have subscribed and purchased the magazine and have enjoyed perusing through it. While it may be a bit pricey, MR includes articles that are very much helpful and I have learned a lot from it over the years, especially tips and tricks and ways to save a buck here or there!
