Railroad Model Craftsman is a Carstens Publications modeling magazine, which complements the company’s very popular industry magazine, Railfan & Railroad. RMC is very similar to Kalmbach's Model Railroader and features the latest information on new models, tips & tricks, news and reviews, layout overviews, plenty of photos, and lots more. I suppose your interest in one magazine over the other (RMC or Model Railroader) really would just depend on which you personally like better although I will say that RMC seems to have more information and tips for beginner modelers just learning the hobby.
I have never taken out a subscription to Railroad Model Craftsman, or even purchased one of their magazines. However, I have perused through the publication and can attest to the fact that it is very similar to Model Railroader in about every way and I suppose it just comes down to your personal interest regarding which one you may like better. If you are interested in both but unsure about which you would rather subscribe to I would suggest stopping by your local hobby shop, newsstand, or bookstore and peruse through both before purchasing (Railroad Model Craftsman is quite popular and can be found in about any newsstand or bookstore if you don’t have a local hobby shop in your area).
For instance, below is what a typical Railroad Model Craftsman magazine features (which cover a little over 100 pages of information in each):
· A Front-Page Editorial
· Letters From Readers
· Product and Industry News
· Book News and Reviews
· Scheduled Events and Notices
· Product Reviews
· Collector News and Information
· Editors Note
· General Classifieds
· Non-Commercial Exchange Listing
· Dealer Directory (Hobby Shops)
· Advertising Index
There is one incentive to Railroad Model Craftsman that you may find appealing, subscriptions to the magazine generally run about $8 cheaper a year than Model Railroader, which is quite a difference when that breaks down to about $2.91 a magazine compared to MR’s $3.58 (if you purchase the periodical individually from a newsstand, bookstore, or hobby shop they do run a bit higher). This will take you to ordering information (through Amazon.com) where you can also learn more about the magazine (as always, if you need any help or have any questions about the ordering process please feel free to get in touch at any time).
