About the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

GSMR has operated the former Southern Railway Murphy Branch from Bryson City since 1988. The line’s rugged Nantahala country supports year-round scenic products, dinner trains, foliage season, and one of the Southeast’s highest-volume Polar Express productions. All Polar departures leave the Bryson City Depot.

What the Ride Is Like

Guests step into the Chris Van Allsburg story with motion-picture soundtrack cues, chefs serving cocoa and treats, and a read-along as the train rolls through quiet winter mountains. At the North Pole stop, Santa boards to greet children and present the first gift of Christmas—a silver sleigh bell. Caroling fills the return to Bryson City.

Pajamas are encouraged; closed-toe shoes are required. The production is family-friendly with a zero-tolerance alcohol policy. Vintage equipment means ADA options are limited—call reservations (800-872-4681) before buying if you need boarding assistance.
