These excursions, which have become popular in recent years at various museums and heritage railroads, offer a perfect blend of scenic beauty, nostalgic charm, and family-friendly fun. In this guide, we explore various Mother's Day rides available in Illinois, highlighting what makes each experience special.

Monticello Railway Museum
The Monticello Railway Museum offers a delightful Mother's Day event centered around classic train rides through the central Illinois countryside. These rides provide an authentic railroading experience for the whole family.
The railroad hosts special trips for Mother's Day Weekend where they state all moms ride for free when accompained by their children!
Experience
- Vintage Railcars: Ride in beautifully preserved vintage railcars that transport you back to the early days of railroad travel.
- Museum Tours: Visitors have the opportunity to explore the museum's extensive collection of historic locomotives and railcars on guided tours.
About The Museum
The Monticello Railway Museum is a treasure trove for enthusiasts of railway history and vintage train experiences. This volunteer-run, non-profit organization offers a unique glimpse into the rich heritage of rail transportation in America.
With its mission centered around the preservation, interpretation, and operation of historic railroad equipment, the museum serves both as an educational resource and a charming attraction for visitors of all ages.
Founded in 1966, the museum has grown significantly over the years, amassing an impressive collection of historic locomotives, railcars, and other railway artifacts. It occupies over 100 acres and includes a fully functional railroad yard, along with a track network that extends over seven miles. This expansive setup affords visitors the opportunity to experience rail travel as it once was, with regular train rides offered throughout the year.
One of the highlights of a visit is the chance to ride a historic train. These excursions are typically conducted on restored vintage locomotives and passenger cars, many of which have been meticulously restored by the museum's dedicated volunteers.
The rides travel between the museum grounds and the historic Wabash Depot in Monticello, providing scenic views of the Illinois countryside along the way. These train rides offer a tangible connection to the past, simulating the bygone era of rail travel with all its charm and character.
The museum's collection is diverse and extensive, featuring steam and diesel locomotives, cabooses, passenger cars, freight cars, and maintenance-of-way equipment.
Notable pieces in the collection include:
- Southern 2-8-0 steam locomotive #401 (built in 1907 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works)
- Republic Steel 0-6-0 #191 (built in 1916 by American Locomotive)
- Canadian National FPA-4 #6789
- Illinois Central RS3 #704
- Illinois Central GP11 #8733
- Wabash F7A #1189
- Pennsylvania E8A #5764 (painted in Tennessee Central colors)
- A variety of Pullman passenger cars, and rare freight cars, each representing different aspects of railroad history.
The museum also houses numerous artifacts and exhibits that chronicle the development and impact of railroads in shaping regional and national history.
The museum's volunteer base is its lifeblood, with individuals contributing countless hours to maintaining and operating the vintage equipment, restoring artifacts, and ensuring a memorable experience for visitors. The dedication and passion of these volunteers is evident in every aspect of the museum’s operations, from the careful restoration of its rolling stock to the warm welcome extended to every guest.
Throughout the year, the museum hosts a variety of special events that draw visitors from far and wide. These events often celebrate rail heritage with themed train rides, historical reenactments, and family-friendly activities. The popular “Railroad Days” event each fall, for example, offers expanded train schedules and additional attractions to delight rail fans and families alike.
The Monticello Railway Museum is far more than just a collection of old trains; it is a vibrant institution dedicated to preserving railroad history and educating the public about this pivotal mode of transportation. Through its extensive collection, engaging programs, and immersive train rides, the museum provides a memorable journey into the past, celebrating the enduring legacy and romance of railroading.
Additional Tips for a Memorable Experience
- Plan Ahead: Mother's Day is a popular time for train rides. Be sure to book your tickets early to secure the best seats and avoid disappointment.
- Dress Comfortably: Trains can be chilly, so layering is advised. Comfortable shoes are also recommended for exploring museum exhibits or enjoying time outdoors.
Mother's Day train rides offer a delightful way to create cherished memories with the special women in your life. Whether your ideal celebration involves a scenic journey, a culinary experience, or a step back in time, Illinois offers a variety of train rides that promise to make Mother's Day truly unforgettable.
