Kentucky - Wild West - Train Rides

Published: July 24, 2026

By: Adam Burns

The Kentucky Railway Museum (KRM) in New Haven, Kentucky offers one of those wonderfully old-fashioned attractions that blends history, scenery, and a bit of theater: a vintage train ride on a former Louisville & Nashville branch line paired with special-event experiences throughout the year. Nestled along South Main Street in New Haven, the museum invites visitors to explore exhibits, browse the gift shop, and—when excursions are running—ride the rails through central Kentucky’s rolling countryside.

One of KRM’s most crowd-pleasing themed events is “The Outlaw Express,” a Wild West train robbery ride built around family-friendly entertainment and a good cause. The museum describes it as an “adventure with the cowboys and lawmen of the old west,” staged onboard the train, and notes that the event supports the WHAS Crusade for Children.

KRM’s excursions operate on what the museum calls L&N’s Historic Lebanon Branch, letting riders experience the rhythm of classic rail travel—jointed rail, grade crossings, small-town trackside views—without needing to be a “railfan” to enjoy it. The broader excursion experience in this part of Kentucky is as much about place as it is about equipment: you’re rolling through a landscape of farms, creek bottoms, and gentle hills where the railroad once tied together rural communities and local industry.

Regional tourism descriptions highlight the museum’s scenic run through the Rolling Fork River Valley, noting a 22-mile excursion between communities in the area (commonly described as a journey from Boston to New Haven). Whether you’re riding for the history, the scenery, or the special event theme, KRM’s operating railroad is the backbone that makes these experiences feel “real,” not staged on a short amusement-park loop.

KRM also emphasizes practical details that matter for visitors planning a day trip—like the fact the museum is located in the Eastern Time Zone (helpful if you’re coming from parts of Kentucky on Central Time).

What is “The Outlaw Express”?

At its core, The Outlaw Express is a live-action reenactment that unfolds during a train excursion. The museum’s own description is straightforward: you’re joining a Wild West robbery ride featuring cowboys and lawmen, and it’s designed as Old West fun for the entire family.

Unlike a static show where you sit and watch from one spot, a train robbery theme works because the railroad setting naturally creates suspense and movement. The train becomes the “stage,” and each car is part of the story: a band of outlaws appears, a marshal (or posse) pursues, and passengers find themselves in the middle of the action—close enough to feel immersed, but presented in a way intended to be fun rather than frightening.

KRM lists multiple dates for the event in its schedule, showing it’s not a one-off but a repeating seasonal feature—an experience they bring back throughout the year.

The Experience

While each operating day has its own rhythm, most visitors experience The Outlaw Express in a sequence that looks something like this:

1) Arrival at the depot and boarding

Your day begins at the museum grounds in New Haven. This is the moment to soak up the atmosphere: the depot area, historic rolling stock, and the sense that you’re stepping into a different era. If you arrive early, you can typically explore exhibits and settle in without rushing (and for families, “no rush” is half the battle).

KRM’s train-ride pages direct visitors to book tickets through their online system, which is typical of modern heritage operations—historic equipment, modern reservations.

2) Rolling out—scenery and anticipation

Once underway, the experience starts out like a classic scenic ride. The countryside slides by at a relaxed pace. The clicking rail joints, the gentle sway of the cars, and the view out the windows help set the mood. Even before the “show” begins, there’s a quiet thrill in realizing you’re not watching a train—you’re on one.

3) The story arrives in the aisles

Then the Old West narrative comes to life. The museum frames the event as a clash between cowboys and lawmen, and that’s exactly the energy it’s aiming for: costumed characters, playful dialogue, and a storyline that can be followed even by kids.

A good train robbery show uses the whole environment:

Announcements and interruptions that feel like they’re happening “in real time.”

Characters moving between cars, so you’re not stuck watching from far away.

A few key moments where the “outlaws” make their presence known and the “law” responds.

4) The “robbery” moment (family-friendly)

Despite the dramatic theme, KRM presents The Outlaw Express as family fun, which is an important signal about tone and content. In other words, expect theatrical “danger” rather than anything genuinely scary—more like a Saturday matinee Western than a haunted house.

5) The return—photos, souvenirs, and the afterglow

When the train returns, the experience usually lingers in the best way: kids talking about their favorite “outlaw,” parents laughing about the most dramatic moment, and plenty of opportunities to browse the gift shop or revisit parts of the museum. Special events are also a great time to take photos—costumes, historic cars, and that unmistakable depot backdrop.

Other Special Events

The Outlaw Express is one piece of a larger calendar of specialty rides—KRM lists a range of themed excursions and activities (from trivia trains to seasonal events) as part of how the museum stays lively and sustainable. That matters because operating historic equipment is expensive, and museums increasingly rely on creative programming to keep the doors open and the wheels turning. In that sense, The Outlaw Express isn’t just entertainment—it’s part of a model that helps preserve Kentucky rail history in an active, public-facing way.

Planning Your Trip

For families, The Outlaw Express is an easy sell: you get a real train ride, a theatrical experience that doesn’t require any prior knowledge, and the novelty of stepping into an Old West story while traveling through Kentucky farmland. For railroad enthusiasts, it’s also a chance to see heritage equipment doing what it was built to do—carry passengers—while attracting new audiences who might not otherwise visit a railway museum.

And perhaps that’s the best summary of what KRM is doing here: using the magic of a moving train to make history approachable. In the span of a single ride, The Outlaw Express turns railroading from something you read about into something you participate in—laughing, watching, listening for hoofbeats (real or imagined), and enjoying a uniquely American blend of transportation history and frontier folklore.  To learn more about this event please click here to visit the KRM website.
