Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad
Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad offers a charming excursion through the heart of Kansas. Based in the historic town of Abilene, this railroad lets visitors experience the golden age of rail travel aboard vintage trains.
- Route: The train journey takes you from Abilene to Enterprise, following an 11-mile stretch that showcases the natural beauty of the Kansas Flint Hills. You'll pass by fields of wildflowers, wheat, and the Smoky Hill River.
- Train Cars: Choose between a climate-controlled passenger car or an open-air gondola, perfect for enjoying the fresh Kansas air.
- Father's Day Special Events: On Father's Day, the railroad hosts a special Father's Day Express dinner train. According to the railroad:
"On Saturday, June 14, our chef, Jeff Higgins Abilene’s Brookville Hotel presents a good, old fashioned fried chicken dinner, with those famous Brookville side dishes: real mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet and sour coleslaw, creamed corn, and homemade biscuits. And for dessert: homemade ice cream! Our train leaves the historic grandeur of Abilene’s Rock Island Depot at 6:00 p.m. for the destination city of Enterprise, Kansas, for a stop at the Hoffman Mill and Country Store."
Booking and Tips
- Booking: Reservations are recommended, especially for special events on Father's Day. Book tickets in advance on their website or by phone.
- Tips: Arrive early to explore the Abilene Railroad Heritage Center before your ride, which provides a fascinating glimpse into the area's history.
More About The Railroad
The Abilene & Smoky Valley is a heritage tourist railroad located in the heart of Kansas, providing a unique window into the region's rich historical tapestry and scenic landscapes. Operating out of the historically significant town of Abilene, which was once a significant cattle trading hub during the late 19th century, the railroad endeavors to preserve the essence of a bygone era while offering an educational and recreational experience for its visitors.
The railroad primarily runs along a 5-mile stretch between Abilene and Enterprise, Kansas. This journey charts a scenic course parallel to the Smoky Hill River, winding through the expansive farmland and quaint rural vistas emblematic of the Midwest. The roundtrip journey typically takes about two hours, offering passengers not just a ride but a journey through history.
The trains are typically hauled by Santa Fe steam locomotive #3415, which is an impressive sight to behold. This locomotive is a Pacific-type engine built in 1919 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, and it underwent extensive restoration to bring it back to operational condition. This steam engine stands out as a highlight of the ride, captivating visitors with its nostalgic chugging and whistling, underscoring the experience with a palpable sense of authenticity.
In addition to steam-powered excursions, the railroad also features a vintage 1950s diesel locomotive, giving visitors a contrasting experience within the realm of historic train travel. Each locomotive and rolling stock piece are lovingly maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers, underscoring the community's commitment to preserving this unique piece of history.
Throughout the year, the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad hosts special events that cater to a wide array of interests. These events include dinner trains, where guests can enjoy a meal as they traverse the beautiful Kansas countryside, and other themed rides that add a festive touch to the journey. These offerings cater to families, history buffs, and train enthusiasts alike, making it a versatile attraction.
The Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad is not just a journey through picturesque landscapes but also a deep dive into the historical significance of rail transport in America's development. It serves as an educational tool, highlighting the impact of railroads on the expansion and economic growth of small-town America, and provides an engaging and memorable experience for all those who step aboard. Whether you're looking for a leisurely afternoon outing, an educational exploration, or simply a nostalgic ride through history, the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad presents a charming and enriching adventure.
Remember to plan ahead for the Abilene & Smoky Valley experience, and make reservations where necessary. These train rides not only offer a glimpse into Kansas's rich rail history but also provide a relaxing and enjoyable way to celebrate dad. Enjoy your journey into the past this Father's Day!
