New Mexico Murder Mystery Train Rides (2026)
Published: April 25, 2026
By: Adam Burns
In a state famous for big skies, big light, and bigger landscapes, Sky Railway has carved out a niche that feels uniquely New Mexican: part historic rail excursion, part rolling performance venue, and part “only in Santa Fe” night out. Operating on the historic rail line between Santa Fe and Lamy, Sky Railway sells itself less as transportation and more as an experience—with themed cars, live entertainment, and curated food-and-drink programs that turn a short run into a memorable event.
Among its most theatrical offerings is “A Murder Mystery,” a 2–2.5 hour immersive production that drops passengers into a stylized whodunit on the rails—complete with professional actors, interactive storytelling, and a complimentary champagne welcome.
A Brief History
At its core, Sky Railway runs on the former Santa Fe Southern line, a storied corridor that links Santa Fe with the rail junction community of Lamy. Today, instead of traditional sightseeing narration alone, the company builds outings around themes—from sunset live music and stargazing to speakeasy-style evenings and theatrical events—so riders can come back and have a totally different trip each time.
That emphasis on storytelling isn’t accidental. Sky Railway’s rebirth was driven by a group of Santa Fe arts and civic figures who set out to revive the route as an “adventure train” concept. Sky Railway’s own history page credits the 2020 effort to save the railroad to a group including George R.R. Martin, Bill Banowsky, Douglas Preston, and Gary Oakley, among others.
The City of Santa Fe also noted that the 18-mile spur between Santa Fe and Lamy was purchased in 2020 and that Sky Railway launched in December 2021, quickly drawing passengers to immersive excursions.
The Route
The run between Santa Fe and Lamy is short enough to fit comfortably into an evening, but scenic enough to justify lingering—high desert horizons, wide-open skies, and that distinctive northern New Mexico palette that changes by the minute near sunset. New Mexico Magazine describes the experience as an “adventure” built on the classic ride between Santa Fe and Lamy, with performers actively engaging passengers rather than fading into the background.
Atlas Obscura similarly frames Sky Railway as a revived attraction running from Santa Fe to Lamy, where the onboard experience can range from music and dance to burlesque and murder mystery depending on the excursion.
A Murder Mystery
“A Murder Mystery” is designed as an immersive theatrical event staged across the moving train. Sky Railway bills it as a rolling spectacle—specifically themed as “Bambini and Binky’s Traveling Circus,” where bright carnival charm hides a darker story and “everyone’s hiding something behind their painted smile.”
Here are the key operational details straight from Sky Railway’s own materials:
-
Duration: 2 to 2.5 hours
-
Ages: All ages
-
Departure/return: Santa Fe Depot, round trip
-
Ticket price: $139 (noting Sky Railway lists this as the base ticket price)
-
Included: reserved seat in an enclosed car, complimentary champagne welcome, and live entertainment (with additional snacks/drinks available for purchase)
The production is performed by The Exodus Ensemble, a troupe Sky Railway has repeatedly partnered with for immersive theater on the line.
What “immersive” means here
Unlike a stage play where you sit quietly and watch, this kind of event is structured to make you feel like you’re inside the story. Sky Railway’s launch announcement emphasizes interactive storytelling, “character encounters,” and “unfolding clues” that place guests “at the center of the investigation.”
In practice, that usually translates to a few hallmark elements:
- Characters move through the car(s) rather than staying “up front,” bringing scenes close to your table or seat.
- Clues are revealed in pieces, so you’re constantly updating your theory.
- Audience involvement is welcomed, whether it’s answering questions, comparing notes, or reacting as the story pivots.
Even if you’re not the “raise my hand in public” type, these shows are typically built so you can participate lightly—observing, guessing, and enjoying the performance—without feeling put on the spot.
The vibe: circus glamour meets Santa Fe night out
The circus framing (“traveling circus,” cotton-candy dreams, and creeping dread) gives the event a playful, stylized tone—more theatrical fun than true-crime heaviness. And because the experience includes a champagne welcome and positions itself as an upscale, period-tinged evening, it lands nicely as a date night, a small group outing, or a “let’s do something different” vacation activity.
How it fits into Sky Railway’s bigger lineup
One reason Sky Railway has gained traction is that it treats the railroad like a platform for rotating concepts—live music on the Sunset Serenade, astronomy-focused nights on the Stargazer, and themed cars that can shift the mood from history to nightlife. Sky Railway itself notes that different cars can carry different themes (history, sunset serenade, speakeasy, stargazing), reinforcing the idea that you’re stepping into a “world,” not just boarding a coach.
Final Thoughts
Plenty of tourist railroads offer scenery. Fewer offer an experience that feels like it belongs to the local arts ecosystem—where the ride is a canvas for musicians, performers, and themed storytelling. New Mexico Magazine captures that “club on wheels” energy and notes the company’s emphasis on local performers and immersive engagement.
“A Murder Mystery” is essentially Sky Railway’s brand in a single excursion: a short historic run, reframed as a living, laughing, clue-chasing evening that turns the journey itself into the main event.
