Model Trains

While this site is primarily focused on the history of American railroads, it would not be complete without also covering model trains.  The information presented here is not intended to provide in-depth look at the hobby, or a place of tips and tricks.  There are several other sites and periodicals which can cover those subjects in far more detail.  Instead, this section is primarily concerned with providing an introduction for anyone interested in the hobby.  Model railroads have been an enjoyable pastime for thousands since the early 20th century.  As technologies have improved the interest has only increased as manufacturers can now produce extremely accurate equipment in scales ranging from O and G to HO and N.  In addition, other companies like Woodland Scenics produce incredibly lifelike trees, plants, and grasses to bring a layout to life.  Some modelers have become masters at their craft, creating such real scenes that it is difficult to tell in photographs real life from make believe!  If you would like to see some of these fine works of art, pick up a copy of Kalmbach Publishing's "Great Model Railroads," published by its subsidiary, Model Railroader.  If you are after inspiration, that is an excellent place to start!
