There is only one location in Maryland hosting an excurion offering whiskey on board, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.  While they do not offer a dedicated tasting train, their first-class dinner trains, the Allegheny Mountain Dinner Train, have whiskey on the menu, as well as many other drink options.

More About The Railroad

The WMSR offers a unique and nostalgic experience that combines history, scenic beauty, and vintage railroading. The railroad operates along a short segment of the Western Maryland Railway's Connellsville Extension (now abandoned west of Frostburg), originally completed in the early 20th century. Today, it serves as a tourist attraction drawing visitors from around the region and beyond.

The journey aboard typically begins at the historic WM Station in Cumberland, a charming city nestled in the Appalachian Mountains. The train travels westward, ascending through the majestic Allegheny Mountains to the quaint and picturesque town of Frostburg. This route covers approximately 15 miles and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, including lush forests, rolling hills, and panoramic vistas.

One of the standout features of the railroad is its vintage steam locomotive, known as the "Mountain Thunder." This Chesapeake & Ohio 2-6-6-2 Mallet, No. 1309, was recently restored and brought back into service to offer travelers an authentic steam-powered experience. The sounds, sights, and smells of the steam engine evoke a sense of nostalgia and provide a vivid glimpse into the golden age of rail travel.

They also operate a handful of diesels painted in historic WM colors including B32-8s #538, #561, and #558 as well GP30 #501.  Finally, their other steam locomotive, 2-8-0 #734 remains out of service.

Passengers can choose from a range of seating options, from standard coach seating to more luxurious first-class and dining car experiences. On-board services include refreshments and dining options, enhancing the journey with tastes to match the scenic vistas unfolding outside the windows.

In addition to the regular excursions, the WMSR offers special themed events throughout the year, such as holiday trains, murder mystery dinners, and wine and cheese tastings. These events add an extra layer of excitement and cater to diverse interests.

The WMSR is not only a tourist attraction but also a vital piece of Maryland's cultural heritage. It serves as a historical educational tool, allowing visitors to learn about the significance of railroads in America's industrial and economic development.

Overall, the railroad offers a charming and immersive journey through history and nature. It appeals to rail enthusiasts, history buffs, families, and anyone seeking a memorable and picturesque adventure in the heart of Appalachia. Whether drawn by the allure of the steam engine or the natural beauty of the region, passengers aboard the WMSR are guaranteed an unforgettable experience.

From the clink of glasses to the soft chug of the train working its way through the countryside, every element of the experience is designed to delight. For those looking to explore Maryland from a fresh perspective, a whiskey train ride promises an unforgettable journey — one where the destination is only part of the adventure, and the narrative of the state unfolds with every sip.
