As Independence Day approaches, many Californians are gearing up for parades, fireworks, and family gatherings. Among the various festive activities, one unique and nostalgic way to celebrate is by embarking on a scenic train ride.

California, with its diverse landscapes and rich railway history, offers an array of train rides throughout the state, from historic geared steam to upscale dinner trains such as aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train.

Interestingly, however, only one location hosts an event celebrating July 4th, the Roaring Camp Railroads.  Learn more about this event below!

Roaring Camp Railroads

Nestled in the stunning redwood forests of the Santa Cruz Mountains, Roaring Camp Railroads offers two historic train experiences: the Redwood Forest Steam Train and the Santa Cruz Beach Train. The Fourth of July festivities at Roaring Camp are particularly special, with patriotic train rides that provide passengers with a unique perspective on the surrounding natural beauty.

The Redwood Forest Steam Train, powered by authentic 19th-century steam locomotives, takes riders on a journey through the towering redwoods. The train's whistle and the chugging of the steam engine evoke a bygone era, creating a perfect backdrop for the celebrations. Meanwhile, the Santa Cruz Beach Train offers a scenic ride from the redwood forest to the sunny beaches of Santa Cruz, giving passengers a taste of California's diverse landscapes.

On Independence Day, Roaring Camp often hosts special events, including live music, barbecue, and family-friendly activities. Evening trips may feature a vantage point for watching fireworks, enhancing the festive atmosphere.

More About The Railroad

The railroad is nestled in the enchanting redwood forests of Felton, California, offering a unique blend of history, nature, and adventure. Established in 1958 by Norman Clark, it aims to preserve the rich heritage of the region while providing an unforgettable experience for its visitors.

Officially known as the Roaring Camp & Big Trees Narrow Gauge Railroad is a 3-foot narrow-gauge railroad, inviting tourists to embark on a journey through the lush redwood forests of California. Beginning at the Roaring Camp depot in Felton, this route challenges the steep climbs up to Bear Mountain, stretching across 3.25 scenic miles.

This railway proudly showcases steam locomotives, many hailing from the storied 1890s, and offers one of the last regular passenger services with such vintage engines in the U.S.

In 1988, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers honored three of these remarkable locomotives as Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark #134, recognizing their enduring significance.

Roaring Camp Railroads not only provides historical train rides but also organizes special events, from themed rides to seasonal celebrations, making it a destination that appeals to families, history enthusiasts, and adventure seekers alike.
