While the Illinois Railway Museum isn’t a “scenic excursion” in the sense of crossing long stretches of forest, it is the largest railway museum in North America and offers demonstration rides on historic equipment into October. If you’re a railfan—or traveling with one—riding behind steam or classic diesel through the museum’s prairie restoration and tree-lined areas can be a satisfying way to mix fall color with world-class rolling stock.

This autumn, on October 4th, they will host their "Steam into Fall" event featuring short steam powered excursions to celebrate the season.

Practical notes: Weekends in early fall often feature expanded operations; consult the museum’s calendar. Bring a camera—there are few places where you can photograph multiple eras of railroading against an autumn backdrop in one afternoon.

Illinois isn’t home to mountain railways, but several state-supported Amtrak routes offer surprisingly good autumn scenery, especially south of Champaign and west toward the Mississippi.

Illini and Saluki (Chicago–Carbondale)

Illinois Zephyr and Carl Sandburg (Chicago–Galesburg–Quincy):

Lincoln Service and Texas Eagle (Chicago–Springfield–St. Louis)

This corridor is more open, but there are still color pops along the Sangamon and Macoupin river areas, and through older towns lined with mature street trees. If you’re visiting the Abraham Lincoln sites in Springfield, an October ride can be a pleasant way to get there.
