Illinois Fall Foliage Train Rides

September 3, 2025

By: Adam Burns

Illinois wears autumn well. Maples flame red along riverbanks, oaks bronze the prairies, and hickories turn gold across rolling farm country.

Seeing that color from a train adds motion, nostalgia, and a vantage you don’t get from the road. Whether you’re after a short heritage ride with pumpkins in tow or a longer rail journey threading through forests and river valleys, here are the best ways to experience fall foliage by rail in Illinois, plus practical tips for planning a peak-color trip.

Locations

Illinois Railway Museum

While the Illinois Railway Museum isn’t a “scenic excursion” in the sense of crossing long stretches of forest, it is the largest railway museum in North America and offers demonstration rides on historic equipment into October. If you’re a railfan—or traveling with one—riding behind steam or classic diesel through the museum’s prairie restoration and tree-lined areas can be a satisfying way to mix fall color with world-class rolling stock.

This autumn, on October 4th, they will host their "Steam into Fall" event featuring short steam powered excursions to celebrate the season.

Practical notes: Weekends in early fall often feature expanded operations; consult the museum’s calendar. Bring a camera—there are few places where you can photograph multiple eras of railroading against an autumn backdrop in one afternoon.

Enjoying The Fall Colors On Amtrak

Amtrak routes for longer fall color views
Illinois isn’t home to mountain railways, but several state-supported Amtrak routes offer surprisingly good autumn scenery, especially south of Champaign and west toward the Mississippi.

Illini and Saluki (Chicago–Carbondale)

The farther south you go, the more forest you’ll see. Between Effingham and Carbondale, the line skirts bottomlands, lakes, and timber that turn late in the season. Southern Illinois often peaks late October into early November, making this a nice option after northern Illinois has gone dull.

Illinois Zephyr and Carl Sandburg (Chicago–Galesburg–Quincy):

West of Princeton the landscape gently rolls, and as you approach Quincy you’ll notice more wooded draws and Mississippi River bluff country. It’s not wall-to-wall forest, but the mosaic of farms, shelterbelts, and river-adjacent timber can be beautiful under a low autumn sun.

Lincoln Service and Texas Eagle (Chicago–Springfield–St. Louis)

This corridor is more open, but there are still color pops along the Sangamon and Macoupin river areas, and through older towns lined with mature street trees. If you’re visiting the Abraham Lincoln sites in Springfield, an October ride can be a pleasant way to get there.

Practical notes for Amtrak: Aim for daytime departures to maximize scenery. Book early for October weekends; window seats are key. Bring a microfiber cloth to clear window glare for photos.

Other Options

Metra

Metra day trips with fall color

If you’re based in the Chicago area, commuter lines can double as low-stress foliage outings. Buy a weekend pass and pick a line with trees, rivers, and older suburbs.

Milwaukee District North to Fox Lake

Expect wetlands, forest preserves, and, near the northern end, the Chain O’Lakes region with heavy tree cover. Get off to explore preserves near Lake Forest, Libertyville, or Round Lake.

Union Pacific North to Kenosha

The ravines and lakefront-adjacent woods of the North Shore towns show dramatic color. Walkable stations in Winnetka, Glencoe, and Lake Forest make it easy to pair rail with leafy strolls.

Rock Island and SouthWest Service

These lines cut through Cook and Will County forest preserves. Tinley Park, Palos, and Orland areas have trail networks that are great for a quick leaf-peeping detour.

Timing your trip

Illinois spans three foliage “zones,” and timing varies year-to-year with weather. As a general guide:

Northern Illinois (Rockford to the Wisconsin line): Early to mid-October.

Central Illinois (Peoria, Bloomington, Champaign): Mid to late October.

Southern Illinois (Effingham to the Ohio River): Late October into early November.

For the freshest updates, check weekly fall color reports from Enjoy Illinois (the state tourism office) and local forest preserves. Heritage railroads announce special trains and sellouts on their social channels—monitor those if you’re aiming for a themed ride.

How to get the most from a fall train ride

Book ahead. Pumpkin trains and October weekends fill fast, especially for families and groups.

Go early or late in the day. Low-angle light makes color pop and reduces window glare.

Pack layers. Open-window cars and river corridors feel cooler than the forecast suggests.

Mind the lens. Bring a soft cloth to wipe windows; a polarizing filter helps cut reflections if you’re shooting through glass.

Make it a full day. Pair rail with nearby parks, orchards, or downtowns. In Monticello, visit Allerton Park. Near South Elgin, stroll the Fox River Trail. Around Freeport, explore Oakdale Nature Preserve.

A final word

Illinois’ best fall rail experiences aren’t about dramatic mountain vistas; they’re about intimacy—riverside canopies brushing a vintage trolley, a steam whistle echoing over a golden field, a small-town depot framed by red maples. Pick the line that fits your pace, time it to your region’s peak, and let the train do what trains do best: slow you down just enough to watch the seasons change.
