In the heartland of America, where the plains stretch endlessly and the skies paint themselves with striking sunsets, there lies a unique opportunity to explore both the rich heritage of the region and the emerging craft beer scene—all aboard a train.

Kansas, known for its wheat fields and cattle ranches, might not be the first place that comes to mind when one thinks of beer culture. However, the Sunflower State offers a charming and increasingly popular way to enjoy a scenic train; savoring a beer during your journey.

The Revival of Rail Travel

Train travel, once a dominant form of transportation in America, has experienced a renaissance of sorts. For many, the rhythmic chugging of a locomotive represents nostalgia—a return to simpler times. Today, this form of travel has evolved beyond just reaching a destination; it’s about the journey and the experiences along the way. This shift has paved the way for themed train rides, including those centered around wine, chocolate, and of course, beer.

Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad

The Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad (A&SVRR) is a heritage railway and tourist attraction located in Kansas, spanning an area rich in both history and scenic beauty. Founded in 1993 by a group of passionate volunteers and train enthusiasts, this non-profit organization seeks to preserve a piece of the classic American railroad experience while offering a glimpse into the region’s historical importance.

The railway primarily operates on a track that stretches about 11 miles between the historic towns of Abilene and Enterprise. Abilene, widely recognized as the first "cowtown" in America, is famous for its role during the cattle drive era, ushering herds from Texas to the Kansas Pacific Railway. Today, the town continues to celebrate its cowboy heritage, making it an ideal starting point for the railroad journey.

Riding on the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad offers a unique experience for visitors, frequently utilizing vintage rolling stock that adds to the authenticity and nostalgia of the trip.

One of the crown jewels of its collection is the 1919-built, 4-6-2 steam locomotive Santa Fe 3415. Restored and operational, this locomotive provides occasional steam-powered journeys, sparking delight in both train enthusiasts and casual visitors. It’s a testament to the railroad’s dedication to preserving history and creating a tangible link to the past.

Throughout the journey, passengers can enjoy views of the picturesque Smoky Hill River Valley, characterized by its lush countryside and gentle riverbanks. The route includes a brief pause at Enterprise where passengers can explore the historic Hoffman Grist Mill, further enhancing the blend of natural beauty and historical experience.

Aside from regular excursions, the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad hosts themed events throughout the year, ranging from dinner trains featuring local cuisine to seasonal special events like the popular "Wild West" and "Christmas" trains, designed to provide entertainment for families and groups.

While the railroad does not host any official craft beer tasting excursions they do offer various beers and other alcoholic drinks with their popular dinner trains.

The A&SVRR is staffed largely by volunteers, demonstrating the strong community support and dedication to preserving local heritage. The railway not only serves as a tourist attraction but also acts as a living museum and educational resource, offering an engaging way for people of all ages to learn about railroading, local history, and engineering.

In summary, the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad stands as a cherished reminder of a bygone era, celebrating the spirit of the American railway and the history of one of the West’s iconic towns. Through its scenic rides and special events, it offers a memorable experience to visitors, securing a lasting impression of both nostalgia and adventure.

The Future of Craft Beers By Rail

The success of beer tastings by train in speaks to a broader trend of experiential tourism. As interest grows, there’s potential for expanded routes and more frequent excursions, possibly introducing international beer tastes or themed rides focusing on other beverages or even pairing events.

Whether you're a railway enthusiast, a beer connoisseur, or simply on the lookout for a unique experience, Kansas’s scenic trains promise more than just a taste—they offer a lasting memory set against the backdrop of one of America's most scenic and storied landscapes.
