An Ohio Christmas Train In Lebanon!

Published: November 17, 2025

By: Adam Burns

Nestled in the historic heart of southwest Ohio, the Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad—better known simply as the LM&M Railroad—is one of the region’s most beloved heritage railways. Operating from the scenic and charming town of Lebanon, the railroad offers families, rail enthusiasts, and visitors a unique connection to the golden age of rail travel.

From leisurely excursions through Warren County to themed events for all ages, LM&M has cultivated a reputation for quality, nostalgia, and community involvement. Of all its seasonal offerings, none is more celebrated than the North Pole Express, a holiday tradition that draws thousands of guests each Christmas season.

A Brief Background and History

The LM&M Railroad operates on a portion of the former Pennsylvania Railroad’s (PRR) Cincinnati–Columbus line, once an important secondary corridor connecting major Ohio communities. Lebanon itself has a history deeply rooted in the railroad industry.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the region was served by several carriers including the PRR and the Cincinnati, Lebanon & Northern (CL&N), the latter later falling under New York Central ownership. These lines transported everything from local freight and agricultural goods to passengers heading between Cincinnati, Dayton, and the smaller towns in between.

By the mid-20th century, shifting travel patterns and improved highway systems gradually eroded the importance of passenger rail across the region. While freight continued for a time, much of the line saw declining use. Heritage rail preservation—gaining momentum nationwide by the 1970s—eventually provided a lifeline for portions of the route. In the decades that followed, local interest groups, short line operators, and community leaders recognized the value of preserving the railroad’s remnants for tourism and historical education.

Out of this preservation effort emerged what is today the Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad, operated by IORY (Indiana & Ohio Railway) in partnership with the LM&M excursion program. The result is a well-maintained, family-friendly heritage operation that preserves regional railroad heritage while offering immersive and enjoyable rides throughout the year.

Present-Day Operations and Excursions

Today, the LM&M operates a variety of excursions from its base in downtown Lebanon, where passengers board near the historic depot. The route carries trains south toward Mason and north toward Hageman Junction, providing a pleasant journey through rural landscapes, wooded corridors, and rolling farmland.

Rolling Stock and Experience

The railway’s equipment often includes vintage passenger coaches from the mid-20th century, many of which have been lovingly restored to recreate the feel of classic railroad travel. The combination of traditional locomotives—often classic EMD diesel-electrics—and authentic coaches helps cultivate a timeless, nostalgic atmosphere.

Passengers enjoy:

  • Open windows during warm months, perfect for families and photographers
  • Climate-controlled cars in cooler seasons, especially during holiday events
  • Uniformed staff who help set the historical tone and assist passengers
  • Onboard narrations during themed rides, detailing railroad history or seasonal storylines

Regular Excursion Types

Throughout the year, LM&M hosts a wide range of rides tailored to different ages and interests. Popular options include:

  • Weekend Scenic Rides offering a laid-back trip through the countryside
  • Princess and Superhero Trains geared toward families
  • Wine & Cheese or Adults-Only Themed Trips
  • Fall Leaf Trains to enjoy Ohio’s autumn colors
  • Easter Bunny Express during spring

These variety-packed offerings ensure that LM&M remains a year-round attraction with experiences that blend local heritage, family entertainment, and accessible tourism.

The North Pole Express: A Southwest Ohio Holiday Tradition

Among all LM&M excursions, the North Pole Express is unquestionably the crown jewel. Each Christmas season, the railroad transforms into a festive world of lights, music, and storytelling, attracting families from across the Cincinnati–Dayton region and well beyond. The event has become a beloved tradition, with many families returning year after year.

A Magical Journey Into the Holiday Season

From the moment guests arrive at the Lebanon station, the North Pole Express immerses them in holiday charm. Decorations fill the platform, cheerful music plays in the background, and costumed characters set the tone before passengers even board.

Once on board, families enjoy:

  • Beautifully decorated coaches filled with lights, garland, and festive touches
  • Christmas carols and holiday narration
  • Visits from Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, who make their way through the train
  • Special holiday treats, often including cookies, hot chocolate, or candy canes
  • A keepsake bell or small gift given to children to remember their journey

The atmosphere is intentionally warm and nostalgic, designed to evoke the excitement of childhood Christmas mornings and classic holiday storytelling.

Destination: The “North Pole”

A hallmark of LM&M’s holiday trip is its imaginative arrival scene. While the train does not travel to the literal North Pole, the destination is transformed into a festive “North Pole” experience complete with lights, decorations, Santa’s workshop themes, and holiday characters. Children delight in stepping off the train into a winter dreamscape where Santa awaits.

Onboard Interactions and Storytelling

Much of the ride is devoted to interactive entertainment. Staff members—dressed as elves or conductors—tell stories, engage children in holiday trivia, lead sing-alongs, and ensure Santa has time to visit each family.

Photography opportunities are abundant, and many families use the occasion to take memorable holiday portraits.

Equipment Setup for the Holidays

The LM&M Railroad puts considerable effort into preparing for the North Pole Express. Passenger cars are decorated extensively, both inside and out, with lights and garland. The locomotives often receive festive touches as well—wreaths on the nose or ribbons across the pilot—adding to the visual charm of the experience.

Why It’s So Popular

Several factors explain why the LM&M North Pole Express has become one of the region’s most enduring Christmas attractions:

  1. Authenticity: Riding a real train gives families an experience that feels both magical and historically grounded.
  2. Accessibility: Lebanon is conveniently located between Cincinnati and Dayton, making it easy for families across southwest Ohio.
  3. Family-Friendly Pricing: Tickets remain comparatively affordable compared to larger holiday attractions.
  4. Warm, Intimate Atmosphere: Unlike large commercial light shows, the North Pole Express offers a cozy, personal experience.
  5. Tradition: Many families return annually, creating multigenerational memories.

Ticketing and Seasonal Demand

Because of its popularity, the event typically sells out well in advance, especially on peak weekend dates in December. LM&M usually opens registration early in the fall, and families are encouraged to book promptly. Different seating classes—with slightly varying amenities—are sometimes offered, depending on the season’s configuration.

A Bright Future in Southwest Ohio

As interest in experiential tourism continues to grow, the Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad is well-positioned to remain a key regional attraction. Its combination of historic equipment, community-focused programming, and popular themed excursions ensures long-term vitality. And as long as families continue seeking meaningful traditions each holiday season, the North Pole Express will remain one of Ohio’s most magical Christmas experiences.

From its early roots in the Pennsylvania Railroad era to its present-day status as a beloved excursion line, the LM&M Railroad offers a blend of history, nostalgia, and good old-fashioned holiday cheer. Whether riding during the golden leaves of autumn, the fresh bloom of spring, or the twinkling lights of December, visitors find a railroad dedicated to storytelling, preservation, and the creation of lasting memories.  To learn more about this holiday event and purchasing tickets please click here to visit the railroad's website.
