Wine by rail capitalize on this richness, offering passengers an immersive experience into the world of Maryland wines.

Western Maryland Scenic Railroad

The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSR) is a heritage railroad offering scenic train rides through the picturesque landscapes of Western Maryland. Nestled amidst the Appalachian Mountains, the railway showcases the region's rich history and breathtaking natural beauty, making it a popular attraction for tourists and train enthusiasts alike.

While the railroad does not host any official wine tasting events they do operate upscale dinner trains which includes fine wines, cocktails, and other alcoholic beverages.  These trips last around 3 hours.

More About The Railroad

Operating primarily between Cumberland and Frostburg, Maryland, the WMSR runs along a 16-mile stretch of track that transports passengers back in time. The train rides often feature vintage steam or diesel locomotives pulling restored railcars, adding to the nostalgic charm of the experience. The line originally formed part of the Western Maryland Railway, established in the 19th century to serve the coal and lumber industries in the region, highlighting its industrial past.

One of the key highlights of the journey is the passage through the scenic Allegheny Mountains. The route includes a dramatic climb up the renowned Frostburg Grade, offering passengers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. The charming town of Frostburg marks one end of the WMSR's excursions. Upon arrival, passengers have time to explore the historic mountain town, often visiting boutique shops, dining at local eateries, or simply strolling through its quaint streets. The station itself houses the Thrasher Carriage Museum, which showcases restored horse-drawn vehicles and adds another layer of historical depth to visitors' experiences.
