North Carolina Valentine's Train Rides

Published: December 27, 2025

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad (GSMR) is one of Western North Carolina’s signature heritage attractions—a scenic train operation based out of Bryson City, right on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains region. From its historic depot, GSMR runs excursions over the storied Murphy Branch (the old Western North Carolina Railroad/Southern Railway route), a line built to connect mountain communities with the outside world and still celebrated today for its rivers, ridgelines, and tunnels.

While GSMR is widely known for warm-weather gorge trips and its hugely popular holiday trains, it also offers one of the most charming winter date-night ideas in the Smokies: a Valentine’s Day dinner train—a romantic, dressed-up evening ride with a chef-prepared meal, mountain scenery, and that unmistakable “rails at night” ambiance.

The GSMR In A Nutshell

GSMR operates excursion service out of Bryson City, North Carolina, providing a front-row seat to landscapes you simply can’t experience the same way by highway: river valleys, wooded slopes, trestles, and stretches where the tracks hug the water. The railroad’s own materials emphasize the “can’t get there by car” feel—an important part of why GSMR remains a must-do for first-time visitors to the Smokies and repeat vacationers alike.

Historically, the rails you ride are tied to the region’s expansion west of Asheville—work that required heavy engineering through rugged terrain and ultimately created a vital transportation link to communities all the way toward Murphy.

Today, GSMR’s calendar includes multiple signature trip types (such as the Nantahala Gorge and Tuckasegee River excursions), plus themed experiences throughout the year.

GSMR’s Valentine’s Train: the highlight for couples

GSMR’s Valentine’s offering is designed as a true special-occasion evening—more than a simple scenic ride. For 2026, the railroad lists its Valentine’s Train on Saturday, February 14, departing Bryson City at 6:00 PM and returning around 9:00 PM.

The ride and the route vibe

Rather than focusing on long daytime vistas, the Valentine’s Train leans into atmosphere: the twilight departure, the rhythm of the rails, and a route that includes an 836-foot-long tunnel—a memorable moment when the windows go dark and the train feels wonderfully removed from the everyday world.

The trip is described as running along the Tuckasegee River, which is a particularly fitting setting for an evening like this—water sounds and valley silhouettes by night, with the comfort of a warmly lit dining car.

Dinner: a three-course, pre-planned experience

This is a chef-prepared, three-course dinner where you choose your entrée in advance. GSMR’s posted menu details include:

  • Caesar salad
  • Entrée choice of 8 oz. prime rib or Norwegian salmon with seasonal sides
  • Vegetarian option: balsamic-glazed grilled Portobello eggplant over quinoa
  • Dessert: chocolate mini mousse

To make it feel properly “Valentine’s,” GSMR also includes a complimentary glass of champagne served in a souvenir stemless wine glass, plus a rose for each guest.

In other words: you’re not cobbling together plans across multiple reservations. The train is the date—transportation, dining, and a setting that’s naturally special.

How to plan the perfect GSMR Valentine’s weekend

A Valentine’s Train ride pairs naturally with a Bryson City getaway. The depot sits right in town, making it easy to build an itinerary around dinner, shopping, and a cozy overnight stay.Arrive early and make it an evening

Even if your departure is at 6:00 PM, treat this like theater night—arrive early, park, pick up tickets, and give yourself time to browse town or grab a pre-train coffee. Bryson City’s walkability is part of the charm: you can step from storefronts to the depot without stress.

Why a Valentine’s train works so well at GSMR

A romantic dinner can be wonderful anywhere—but a moving dining room changes the feel. You’re not staring at the same walls all night. The scenery shifts, the wheels provide a gentle soundtrack, and conversation feels easier because the experience itself gives you something to share in real time.

And GSMR is especially suited to it: this is a railroad built around destination-worthy views and memorable “set pieces” (like that tunnel and river running), with a long track record of packaging rides into full experiences.  To learn more about this event and purchasing tickets please click here to visit the railroad's website.
