North Carolina ~ Murder Mystery ~ Dinner Train Ride

Published:  January 6, 2026

By: Adam Burns

In the heart of North Carolina, where a rich tapestry of history and culture intersects with beautiful landscapes, there lies an intriguing, fascinating, and breathtaking collection of historic scenic train rides, from the popular Great Smoky Mountains Railroad and Tweetsie Railroad to the New Hope Valley Railway and even excursions offered by the North Carolina Transportation Museum.

Unfortunately, there are currently no murder mystery dinner trains offered throughout the Tarheel State.  However!  The City of Burgaw, home to the state's oldest surviving train depot, completed in 1850, hosts a muder mystery dinner experience on the grounds on September 20, 2025 beginning at 7 PM.  To learn more please visit their calendar.

The Experience

A murder mystery dinner train is more than just a meal on wheels. It’s a full-fledged theatrical performance that unfolds in the comfort of a vintage train carriage. As passengers board the train, they are transported into an environment where storytelling takes center stage. The characters, portrayed by talented actors, mingle with guests, setting the scene for an evening of intrigue and deduction.

These events typically begin with a convivial gathering where passengers are introduced to the storyline and the various characters, some of whom may seem suspicious from the onset.

As the train chugs along the tracks, guests enjoy a delectable multi-course meal punctuated by moments of drama and humor. The plot, rich with red herrings and clever twists, challenges passengers to piece together clues and solve the mystery before the train returns to the station.

Burgaw Train Depot

The city of Burgaw's restored 1850 depot was completed by the Wilmington and Raleigh Railroad.  When this system opened in 1840 between Wilmington and Weldon it was then the longest continuously operated railroad in the world at 161.5 miles.

It was later renamed as the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad in 1855 and then joined the much larger Atlantic Coast Line in 1900.  The ACL would go on to form the Seaboard Coast Line in 1967, which became part of the modern day CSX Transportation in the 1980s.

The Appeal Of Murder Mystery Dinner Trains

Interactive Entertainment

Unlike traditional theater performances, murder mystery dinner trains invite audience participation. Guests engage with characters, ask questions, and even play a role in the unfolding plot, creating a more immersive experience.

Nostalgic Charm

Traveling by train evokes the romantic allure of a bygone era. Many of these murder mystery events are hosted in restored vintage train cars, complete with period details that add authenticity and charm.

Culinary Delight

These rides often feature gourmet meals prepared by top chefs. A typical menu might include options such as herb-crusted chicken, filet mignon, or vegetarian pasta, each accompanied by side dishes and decadent desserts. Fine dining complements the sophisticated atmosphere of the event.

Engaging Storylines

Each event features a unique mystery, with themes ranging from classic noir to quirky capers. The ever-changing stories encourage repeat participation as no two experiences are alike.

A murder mystery dinner train offers a compelling combination of theater, gastronomy, and travel. It’s an opportunity to step into a different world for a few hours, immerse yourself in a gripping tale, and revel in the camaraderie of fellow detectives.

Whether celebrating a special occasion or simply seeking a memorable night out, these events promise an adventure that lingers long after the train rolls back into the station. As you disembark, having pieced together the puzzle of the evening, you might just find yourself eagerly planning your next trip into the world of rail-bound mysteries.
