Hocking Valley Scenic Railway

Overview

Located in Nelsonville, Ohio, the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway offers historic train rides through the beautiful terrain of southeast Ohio. This railway is run by dedicated volunteers passionate about preserving the railroading experience.

Independence Day Activities

For the first time in 2025, the railroad will host a special event for the July 4th, the Fireworks Express.  This event takes guests on a 22-mile train ride to East Logan that will end up at Thunder in the Valley, one of Ohio's largest fireworks displays.  The railroad states the entire event lasts more than 3 hours.

More About The Railroad

The HVSR has been delighting visitors since its inaugural journey in 1972.  Rooted in history, the railroad operates over former Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, which were initially constructed in the 1860s.

These tracks were integral to the development of the coal and iron industry in Ohio, contributing to the growth of towns and industries along their route. Today, the railway preserves this rich history by offering excursions on vintage locomotives and rolling stock, allowing visitors to experience a piece of the past while enjoying the natural beauty of the region.

The excursions typically depart from the town of Nelsonville, a charming and historic community that provides an ideal starting point for this nostalgic journey. Passengers can choose from a variety of themed train rides that cater to different interests and age groups, making the railway a versatile attraction.

One of the most popular offerings is the regular scenic tour, which takes passengers on a leisurely ride through the Hocking Hills area. This journey offers stunning views of dense forests, rolling hills, and the serene Hocking River, emphasizing the natural beauty that surrounds the railway. The knowledgeable conductors often provide commentary on the area's history and the significance of the landmarks visible along the route.

Additionally, the railway hosts a variety of special event trains throughout the year. Seasonal offerings such as the "Santa Train" during the holiday season and the "Easter Bunny Train" attract families looking for unique and memorable experiences. In autumn, the "Fall Foliage Tour" becomes a major draw, showcasing the spectacular array of colors as the leaves change, while the "Robbery Train" offers an interactive experience with actors performing a Wild West-style robbery aboard the train.

The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway is deeply committed to its mission of preservation and education. By offering these excursions and themed events, the railway not only entertains but also educates the public about the history of railroads and their importance in American industrial progression. This dedication to historical accuracy and cultural preservation places the railway as a respected educational institution in the region.

Volunteers play a crucial role in the operation of the railway, handling everything from train maintenance to conducting tours and operating the trains. This community-driven approach fosters a strong sense of pride and ensures ongoing engagement with railway heritage. It also provides opportunities for individuals to learn skills related to train operations and maintenance, thereby expanding the knowledge base related to historical locomotives.

In summary, the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway offers a unique blend of history, education, and entertainment. With its meticulously maintained vintage trains, stunning natural surroundings, and a calendar full of themed adventures, it captures the imagination of visitors of all ages. By preserving the legacy of the railroad era, it provides a platform for the public to connect with Ohio's industrial history in an immersive and enjoyable way, making it a cherished attraction in the region.
