"Day Out With Thomas The Train" Rides (2024)

Thomas The Train, also affectionately known as Thomas the Tank Engine, has been a pop culture icon since the late 1970s with the TV series Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends.

The television series, written and produced by Britt Allcroft, is actually based off the The Railway Series of books written by Englishmen Wilbert Awdry and his son in the 1940s.

Interestingly, the show even drew some interest from adults due to the superb craftsmanship of the models and layouts depicted.  Today, this has largely been replaced by CGI and computer animation.  

Thomas himself is based from a real steam locomotive design, the E2 Class, an 0-6-0T ("T" referred to tank) wheel arrangement conceived by Lawson Billinton of the early 20th century.   Listed below is the current upcoming 2024 schedule and dates regarding where Thomas The Tank Engine will be appearing.

Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum (Calera):  The Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum has been telling the Alabama's railroad history since 1963 and today offers a wide range of exhibits to see.

The museum also offers excursion train rides from March through October, featuring both steam and diesel locomotives.  They host "A Day Out With Thomas" on these dates in the spring:

Roaring Camp Railroads (Felton): Owned and operated by the same organization which runs the Skunk Train the Roaring Camp hosts a number of different trains throughout the year including a beach train and forest train.

Roaring Camp Railroads is a historic tourist railroad located in Felton, California, in the heart of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Founded in 1963, Roaring Camp has been offering visitors a unique and immersive experience of California's rich railroad heritage for over half a century.

Visitors to Roaring Camp can ride on one of two historic steam trains: the Redwood Forest Steam Train or the Santa Cruz Beach Train. Colorado

Colorado Railroad Museum (Golden): The Colorado Railroad Museum, based in Golden, houses a large collection of rolling stock and locomotives. They also host train rides during the weekends and other special events, including "A Day Out With Thomas" on three separate weekends in September.

During this event the museum offers 20 minute train rides around the grounds, live theatrical entertainment, a hay bale maze, a scavenger hunt, outdoor scale model trains, visit Thomas and his friends, purchase merchandise, and more! The museum states that since capacity is limited, advanced tickets are required.

The Colorado Railroad Museum is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of railroading in Colorado and the American West. The museum is located in Golden, Colorado, and it was established in 1959 by a group of local rail enthusiasts, led by Robert W. Richardson and Cornelius W. Hauck, who were interested in preserving the state's railroad history.

The museum's collection includes over 100 locomotives, passenger cars, freight cars, and cabooses, as well as numerous artifacts, photographs, and documents related to Colorado's railroads. Other notable locomotives in the collection include the Denver, South Park & Pacific Railroad No. 191, which is a narrow-gauge (3 foot) steam locomotive that was used to haul ore and passengers in the Rocky Mountains.

They host "A Day Out With Thomas" during select dates in the spring, including special appearances by Percy!

Florida Railroad Museum (Parrish):  While the Florida Railroad Museum mostly focuses on preserving the state's and region's railroad history it also operates a nearly a 7-mile stretch of railroad between Parrish and Willow and includes your choice of an open-air or air-conditioned passenger car to enjoy the ride.  They host "A Day Out With Thomas" on these dates:

SAM Shortline Railway (Cordele): The SAM Shortline excursion features a nearly 70-mile round trip that makes stops along the four small towns that dot the line while also traveling through the Georgia Veterans State Park.

SAM Shortline excursions are a popular attraction that offers train rides on vintage railcars through the scenic countryside of Southwest Georgia. The train excursions provide an enjoyable and unique experience for visitors of all ages.

The excursions made their first trip on October 26, 2002, following two years of work acquiring equipment and funding, and have since become a beloved attraction in Cordele.  It operates a nearly a 70-mile round trip along a former Seaboard Air Line corridor that passes five small towns (Cobb, De Soto, Leslie, Americus, and Plains) between its home base of Cordele and Archery.

One of the most popular excursions offered is the Plains Express, which takes visitors on a 22-mile round-trip journey from Plains to Americus. The trip takes visitors through the picturesque countryside of Sumter County, passing through historic towns and landmarks such as the Andersonville National Historic Site, the Americus Historic District, and the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site.

Another popular excursion is the Sumter Explorer which travels from Georgia Veterans State Park to Archery.  This excursion travels from the Georgia Veterans State Park to the town of Americus, offering visitors with a unique opportunity to explore the beautiful natural landscapes of Georgia, passing through pine forests, wetlands, and streams.

The Shortline also offers a variety of special events throughout the year, such as the popular Halloween Express train ride during Halloween season and the Candy Cane Express train ride during the holiday season. Illinois

Illinois Railway Museum (Union):  The Illinois Railway Museum is one of the premier, and largest, railroad museums in the country.  The IRM, as it's also known, has an impressive collection of preserved and restored equipment at its amazing facility. Whitewater Valley Railroad (Connersville):   The Whitewater Valley Railroad based Connersville operates a 19-mile line connecting to Metamora and they use one of several diesel locomotives on the property to power their trains.

The railroad also hosts a number of special events throughout the year such as the Polar Express and "A Day Out With Thomas."  Dates: 

Iowa

(Updated, 2024) Boone & Scenic Valley Railway (Boone):  The Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad is a museum and operating tourist railroad using former Chicago & North Western trackage (it was originally an interurban/trolley line).  

Its trains feature both steam and diesel locomotives, as well as restored trolley car #50 (they also have a very extensive collection of non-operating locomotives and cars).  They host "A Day Out With Thomas" the tank engine on these dates:

Kentucky

Kentucky Railway Museum (New Haven):  The Kentucky Railway Museum dates back to 1954 and is one of the oldest such organizations in the nation.   

Since that time the museum has grown steadily and today features large collection of rolling stock and even features excursion trains which are pulled by the most famous locomotive on the grounds, ex-Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 Pacific Type #152 (currently under restoration).

Today, they offer numerous specials throughout the year including train robberies, dinner trains, murder mysteries, and host "A Day Out With Thomas" which makes his stop at the museum in 2024.

Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum (Baltimore):  The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum today is one of the most recognized, respected and highly regarded railroad museums, not only in this country but also the world.

It houses historic railroad equipment (not only from its namesake railroad, the Baltimore & Ohio but also many important historical pieces from other railroads around the country).

Massachusetts

Edaville Rialroad: The Edaville Railroad, now known as Edaville Family Theme Park, is a revered heritage railroad in South Carver, Massachusetts. Established by Ellis D. Atwood (thus "Edaville") in 1947, it was one of the earliest railroad-based tourist attractions in the United States.

Atwood purchased most of the two-foot gauge railroad equipment from the defunct Bridgton and Saco River Railroad of Maine, transforming cranberry bog transportation into a remarkable tourist train experience. The original route meandered among the bogs, depicting the breathtaking Cape Cod landscape.

Edaville Railroad, initially a five-mile loop, was expanded to a 5.5-mile loop in 1996, adding an optional extension to Pine Grove, further enhancing the scenic journey. The park also houses an indoor play area, traditional amusement rides, and hosts routine seasonal festivals.

Henry Ford Museum (Dearborn):  One of Michigan's most well-known museum this complex features an impressive collection of artifacts related to the history of transportation in this country including several pieces of rolling stock and steam locomotives.

Huckleberry Railroad (Flint):  The Huckleberry Railroad is part of the Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad Park. While the railroad’s star attraction is narrow-gauge steam locomotives #464, originally owned by the Denver & Rio Grande Western, the Huckleberry has other motive power on the premises.  

They host "A Day Out With Thomas" on these dates in 2024:

The Huckleberry Railroad is a historic narrow-gauge railroad located in Flint, Michigan, that offers a unique and nostalgic experience for visitors. The railroad is part of the Genesee County Parks and Recreation system and has been operating since 1976.

History

The line currently used by the Huckleberry Railroad was originally opened in 1872 by the Flint River Railroad. It later became known as the Otter Lake Branch of the Pere Marquette Railway.  At its peak the line extended 19.5 miles from Flint to Fostoria.

The restored Huckleberry Railroad officially opened in 1976 and has been operating as a popular tourist attraction ever since. The railroad has several vintage steam locomotives, passenger cars, and cabooses that have been restored to their original condition.

The North Shore Scenic Railroad is a unique and enjoyable way to experience the natural beauty and rich history of the Duluth region. Whether you're a train enthusiast or just looking for a fun and educational family outing, the North Shore Scenic Railroad is a must-see attraction.

The railroad currently operates about 26 miles of former Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range trackage between downtown Duluth and Two Harbors. It is the only heritage railroad which skirts Lake Superior its entire length and offers fantastic views throughout the trip.

The railroad began hosting public excursions in 1990 when it was still owned by the DM&IR. In 1996 the Lake Superior Railroad Museum took over operations and has been successfully carrying passengers ever since. Throughout the year they host several special events, such as during Christmas, while also offering general excursions throughout the summer.

Finally, in addition to train rides the railroad also offers opportunities for visitors to learn about the region's rich history and culture through exhibits, displays, and presentations at its historic depot.

Virginia & Truckee Railroad (Virginia City):  The Virginia and Truckee Railway began when it was chartered in 1869 and meant to provide transportation services to the Reno and Carson City areas.  

The railroad ceased to exist as a freight line by 1950 but slowly made a comeback as a tourist line over the years.

Today, about 15 miles of the line are operable although rebuilding of the route is not yet complete along with additional restorations of locomotives and equipment.

Delaware River Railroad Excursions (Phillipsburg): The Delaware River Railroad Excursions is operated by the New York Susquehanna & Western Technical & Historical Society.  The excursions have grown into a popular attraction for the Phillipsburg region, witnessing around 100,000 passengers annually.  Throughout the year the railroad features everything from wine trains to the official "The Polar Express" train rides.  In addition, they also host a "Day Out With Thomas" the tank engine during one weekend in the summer.

The Delaware River Railroad Excursions have grown into a popular attraction for the Phillipsburg region, witnessing around 100,000 passengers annually.  The heritage of these train rides begins with the New York Susquehanna & Western Technical & Historical Society (NYS&WT&HS), a non-profit organization founded in 1988.

The excursions were founded in 2004 in partnership with the town of Phillipsburg, it's Urban Enterprise Zone, and the NYS&WT&HS with the goal of revitalizing the South Main Street area.  They currently operate excursions over 15 miles of track along the Delaware River between Phillipsburg and Riegelsville, New Jersey (with Riegelsville, Pennsylvania situated directly across the river).

This track is owned by short line freight carrier Black River and Western Railroad, which also hosts its own public excursions.  Some of its trips are even pulled by a historic steam locomotive, 2-8-0 #60.

All Delaware River Railroad Excursions are hosted within restored passenger cars dating from the 1950s, which originally ran on the Long Island Rail Road in New York.

Medina Railroad Museum (Medina): The Medina Railroad Museum mostly looks to preserve the area's railroad history.  The museum is housed in the New York Central's former freight depot which dates back to 1905.  The building is significant as the largest wooden freight depot ever built for the NYC and now houses the museum's collection of over 6,000 artifacts.

In addition to these pieces the museum also operates a 34-mile round trip excursion train. One of their specials is hosting "Day Out With Thomas" events in May.

One of the museum's most impressive artifacts is the original bell from New York Central 4-4-0 #999, which broke the-then world speed record for the fastest moving vehicle on earth in May, 1893 by reaching a top speed of 112.5 mph.

Another highlight of the museum is its operating model train layout. This impressive display features a detailed replica of the town of Medina in the 1940s, complete with a variety of buildings, vehicles, and people. The model trains run on multiple tracks, providing a captivating visual experience for visitors of all ages.  Other layouts depict railroads in the Civil War era.

North Carolina Transportation Museum (Spencer):  The North Carolina Transportation Museum, located in Spencer, NC, is situated on the former Southern Railway’s largest steam locomotive repair shops which includes the Bob Julian Roundhouse, the Flue Shop, and the Master Mechanics Shop.

As part of the museum they operate excursion trains and is one of just two locations in the United States to feature the live steam locomotive version of Thomas the tank engine.  Percy is also featured during "A Day Out With Thomas."

Tweetsie Railroad (Blowing Rock): The Tweetsie Railroad has been operating since 1957 and is based from the historic East Tennessee & Western North Carolina Railroad, a classic narrow-gauge system which once served both its namesake states.  Today, they use three miles of narrow-gauge most often employing their, 4-6-0 "Ten wheeler", #12 to pull excursions.  They will host Thomas this summer.

Today, the Tweetsie Railroad features a variety of attractions and activities that are sure to delight visitors of all ages. One of the most popular attractions is the Wild West Adventure, a thrilling ride that takes visitors on a journey through the Wild West. Strasburg Railroad (Strasburg):  The Strasburg Railroad, located in the heart of Pennsylvania’s Amish community in Lancaster, is the country’s oldest railroad still in operation dating back to 1832.

The railroad handles both freight and passengers but is also an operating history book featuring historic steam locomotives with restored, period passenger cars (dating to the 1800s).

They provide guests everything from dinner train service to an open bar car for adults. One of their special events is hosting "A Day Out With Thomas" several times throughout the year. Percy will be present during the trips! 

This event is somewhat unique as the Strasburg Railroad offers train rides lasting about 45 minutes instead of the typical 25-30 minute trips provided at most other locations hosting Thomas.

History

The Strasburg Railroad has a long and storied history, dating back to the early 19th century. The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga, Tennessee, is a popular attraction for train enthusiasts and families alike. The museum is home to a collection of vintage steam and diesel locomotives, passenger cars, and cabooses, as well as a variety of exhibits and events.

The Grapevine Railroad, also known as the Grapevine Vintage Railroad, is a heritage railway operated by the Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau and offers passengers the opportunity to experience the charm and nostalgia of a bygone era of rail travel.

The history of the Grapevine Railroad dates back to the late 1800s when the Cotton Belt Route, a subsidiary of the St. Louis Southwestern Railway, built a railroad through Grapevine. The railroad was an important transportation link for the town, which was a hub for the local agriculture and farming industries.

Today, the Grapevine Railroad operates a variety of steam and diesel-powered locomotives, including the 1896 steam locomotive "Puffy" (currently out of service) and a GP-7 diesel locomotive, #2199 (originally owned by the  Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railroad). 

"Puffy" is a 4-6-0 "Ten-wheeler" type, numbered 2248, and was built by the Cooke Locomotive & Machine Works for the Southern Pacific Railroad.  Passengers can ride in vintage passenger cars that have been restored to their original condition, complete with period furnishings and décor.

One of the most popular attractions is an excursion to the historic Stockyards, which takes passengers on a 21-mile round-trip journey between Grapevine and Fort Worth's historic Stockyards district. The journey takes approximately one hour each way and passes through scenic countryside and suburban neighborhoods.

The railroad also offers special themed events throughout the year, such as the "North Pole Express" during the holiday season and the "Grapevine Jazz Wine Train" in the spring. These events offer passengers unique experiences, such as meeting Santa Claus or enjoying live jazz music while sampling local wines.
