Vermont, the Green Mountain State, is known for its stunning landscapes, quaint small towns, and rich history. These excursions provide not only a nostalgic journey through the state's picturesque countryside but also an opportunity to celebrate America's birthday in a unique and memorable way.

The Allure of Train Travel

There’s something inherently nostalgic about train travel. It recalls a bygone era when railroads were the backbone of American transportation. Today's train rides, especially on special occasions like Independence Day, evoke a sense of adventure and romance. In Vermont, these excursions have become an exquisite way to witness the state’s charm and natural splendor, all from the comfort of a vintage rail car.

Green Mountain Railroad/Vermont Rail System

Currently, the only location hosting a July 4th event is the Green Mountain Railroad. This railroad offers several themed tours throughout the year, but their Independence Day ride, the "Independence Day Flyer," is particularly special.

Departing from the historic railroad station in Vergennes, this journey meanders through some of Vermont's most beautiful landscapes, featuring lush forests, tranquil lakes, and idyllic farmland.

The experience, lasting between 1-2 hours, travels from Vergennes to Burlington where guests are taken to the Waterfront Park without the hassle of driving or parking to enjoy a fireworks display. The train then returns to Vergennes.

More About The Railroad

The Green Mountain Railroad is a regional freight railroad operating in the state of Vermont. Founded in 1964, it was initially created to preserve rail service in the region after the historic Rutland Railroad shutdown operations.

Over the years, it has shifted focus primarily to freight transportation, serving a variety of industries, including agriculture, quarrying, and manufacturing. The GMRR plays a crucial role in Vermont's logistics, providing essential connections between local businesses and the broader national rail network. Its lines traverse scenic landscapes, passing through picturesque rural areas and small towns, showcasing Vermont's natural beauty.

Additionally, the railroad has dabbled in passenger services, offering occasional scenic and seasonal train excursions that attract tourists. Known for its commitment to sustainability and regional economic support, the railroad remains an integral part of Vermont's transportation infrastructure, balancing heritage preservation with modern logistical needs.

Scenic Views and Photography Opportunities

The train passes several bucolic Vermont farms, each presenting ample opportunities for photography. From these beautiful views to the shimmering waters of Lake Champlain, passengers are treated to scenes that capture the essence of Vermont's natural beauty. As the train winds its way through verdant valleys and over historic bridges, there are countless moments to capture on film or simply enjoy firsthand.

Community and Connection

Train rides like these foster a sense of community, bringing together residents and visitors alike to celebrate a shared history. Passengers often engage in conversations, exchanging stories and making new friends. This sense of camaraderie adds another layer of enjoyment to the journey, making it more than just a simple ride, but rather an experience rich in human connection.

Booking and Plan Ahead

For those interested in experiencing this event, early reservations are recommended due to the popularity of these events. Tickets often become available months in advance, providing ample time to plan and coordinate with family and friends. Online platforms for booking, as well as detailed itineraries, are typically offered by the train operators, ensuring a smooth and organized experience.

An Independence Day train ride stands out as a unique way to celebrate the Fourth of July. It's an experience that combines the splendor of nature, the allure of historical travel, community spirit, and the joys of celebration into a single, unforgettable day. Whether you're a local resident or a visiting tourist, the blend of history, scenery, and festivity makes for a remarkable celebration that truly captures the heart and soul of Vermont.
