When we think of the Wild West, images of dusty trails, rugged cowboys, and steam-belching trains capturing the vast frontier come racing to mind. While the era of the Old West has long since faded into the annals of history, the spirit of adventure it inspired still thrives in certain parts of the United States, even as far east as Wisconsin.
Known for its lush landscapes and Great Lakes' shores, perhaps the Cheese State isn't the first locale you’d associate with tales of the Wild West. However, through a unique blend of interactive entertainment and historical reverence, Wisconsin offers a captivating glimpse into the past with its Wild West train rides. This thrilling journey is a perfect outing for both history enthusiasts and adventurous families alike.
A Journey Back in Time
Stepping aboard one of Wisconsin's historic steam trains is like hopping into a time machine to the 19th century. These trains provide a tangible slice of American history, inviting passengers to experience the bygone era of the Old West. With their authentic locomotives and vintage railcars, these train rides merge nostalgia with education, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of a unique period in U.S. history.
Only one organization in Wisconsin currently offers a Wild West train ride experience, the Lumberjack Steam Train!
Lumberjack Steam Train
This historic attraction is located in Laona, offering a nostalgic glimpse into the bygone era of steam locomotives and timber operations.
The train, powered by a restored steam locomotive - Laona & Northern Railway 2-6-2 #4 (built by Vulcan in 1916) - provides visitors with a scenic journey through the forested landscape of the Northwoods. The excursion begins at the Camp Five Museum, a living history museum that highlights the region's rich logging history and the development of the timber industry.
Onboard, passengers can enjoy the authentic experience of a steam train ride, complete with the sights and sounds of the locomotive in action. The journey includes a visit to the “Elk Ranch” and the Blacksmith Shop, adding to the educational aspect of the trip.
The Lumberjack Steam Train is not only an enjoyable family-friendly activity but also an important historical preservation effort, celebrating the cultural heritage and natural beauty of the area.
One of their special events is their "Cowboy Reenactment" held during a few dates each year where a train robbery from the "Old West" takes place.
While places like Colorado and Texas often dominate the Wild West narrative, Wisconsin provides unique offerings that extend beyond the typical. Here are a few reasons why a Wild West train is a must-do:
Family-Friendly Entertainment: These train rides are designed with family entertainment in mind. Children and adults alike are enthralled by the dynamic reenactments, making history engaging and accessible for everyone.
Authenticity: With genuine steam engines, trains maintain an air of authenticity that transports visitors back to the 1800s.
Scenic Beauty: Wisconsin’s lush greenery and stunning natural vistas provide a beautiful backdrop, enhancing the overall experience. The rides are a feast for the eyes, blending the state's natural beauty with its rich historical offerings.
Educational Value: Beyond entertainment, these events offer educational takeaways about the pivotal role railroads played in American history. They provide insights into the locomotive's influence on expansion, commerce, and societal change during the frontier era.
To maximize your adventure, it's advisable to plan your visit in advance. Here are a few tips to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience:
Dress Comfortably: While the adventure is rooted in historical drama, comfort is key. Opt for casual clothing suited for sitting periods and gallery explorations afterward.
Engage with the Stories: Take advantage of the knowledgeable staff and actors by asking questions and learning as much as you can about the era. The stories shared are part of what makes the experience so vivid and memorable.
