Arkansas & Missouri Railroad Fall Foliage Train Ride (2026): Dates, Tickets & Tips

Published: August 6, 2026

By: Adam Burns

Arkansas and Missouri Railroad excursion train through Ozark fall color

Boston Mountains hardwoods, Winslow Tunnel, and high trestles make the A&M one of the South’s premier autumn rail experiences. A&M Railroad photo.

The Arkansas & Missouri Railroad is northwest Arkansas’s signature fall product: a working regional freight railroad that also runs climate-controlled vintage coaches, café/parlor cars, and glass-dome seating through the Boston Mountains—the highest Ozarks in this part of the range. Fall Foliage season commonly spans late September into November, with multi-length trips from Springdale and Van Buren that sell hard once the hills turn.

Full scenic overview: Arkansas & Missouri Railroad: Complete 2026 Scenic Train Guide.

About the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad

Unlike pure tourist loops, the A&M earns its keep as a freight railroad on former Frisco territory. When passenger trains run, riders get real grades, rock cuts, the roughly 1,700-foot Winslow Tunnel, and trestle views over forested valleys. Boarding is typically at Springdale and/or Van Buren depending on the ticketed segment. Northwest Arkansas tourism (Bentonville, Fayetteville, Fort Smith gateway) feeds strong autumn demand.

What the Ride Is Like

This is a longer, more railroad-like day than a 90-minute heritage loop. Narration, climate-controlled cars, and dome seating make the mountain climb comfortable while the scenery does the work: deep hardwoods, tunnel drama, and trestle photo moments. The full Springdale–Van Buren outing is a true day trip with time to explore Van Buren; shorter Winslow turns fit tighter itineraries.

Treat the A&M as an active freight railroad—obey all crew instructions and never trespass for trackside photos.

Peak Color Notes

Boston Mountains / northwest Arkansas hardwoods often show strong color from late September through October, with usable windows into early November depending on the year. Elevation and ridge exposure mean color can vary mile-by-mile along the same train.

What to Expect Onboard

  • Climate-controlled vintage coaches and upgraded café/dome options when booked
  • Narrated mountain railroad experience
  • Longer sit time—bring snacks if your car class does not include food
  • Arrive early for parking and boarding at the ticketed depot

Tickets & Practical Information

  • Booking: Advance online or by phone strongly recommended; peak fall weekends sell out
  • Pair with: Northwest Arkansas cultural corridor; Fort Smith area; cross-border Branson Scenic on a longer Ozarks rail trip
  • Tickets: amrailroad.com · phone often listed as (479) 725-4017

Tips for the Best Experience

  • Book the long day trip if you want maximum mountain miles; shorter segments if time is tight
  • Reserve dome/parlor early if that seating matters
  • Confirm whether your ticket is full rail round trip vs. other logistics
  • Stay off private property and active track for photos
