The information included below is Boston & Maine's public timetables from its listing in the August, 1952 issue of "The Official Guide Of The Railways."  Also included is a system map and corporate information.

The Boston and Maine Railroad (B&M) was a U.S. Class-I railroad that operated from 1836 until 1983 within the New England states.

Its origins date back to merger of several smaller lines and its growth was spurred by the industrial revolution. The B&M's colossal network reached from southern Maine, through New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont and into New York. It played a key role in developing the region’s industrial economy, transporting goods and people extensively.

At its peak the railroad operated roughly 2,084 route miles. B&M's golden era was in the early 20th century with innovations like the Flying Yankee, a streamlined, diesel-electric train. But, by mid-20th century, competition from automobiles and airlines led to decline.

After a tumultuous period, Guilford Transportation Industries took over B&M in 1983. Today, much of its former network is part of Pan Am Railways (CSX Transportation).

Browsing its history provides insight into railway transport evolution and its impact within New England's socio-economic framework. Its legacy lives on through preservation efforts in museums and historical societies. The B&M story is one of innovation, growth, decline, and rebirth.
