Mother's Day Train Rides In Colorado: A Complete Guide
Published: March 19, 2025
By: Adam Burns
Mother's Day is the perfect occasion to express love and gratitude for the special women in our lives. This year, why not go beyond the usual flowers and brunch and treat your mom to an unforgettable scenic train ride through the beautiful landscapes of Colorado?
With its stunning mountains, lush valleys, and historic railways, Colorado offers several unique train experiences that are sure to make Mother's Day memorable. Here's a guide to the best themed train rides in the state.
Georgetown Loop Railroad
Overview
This narrow-gauge heritage railroad connects the mining towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume and offers a shorter but incredibly scenic ride through the rugged Rocky Mountains.
Mother's Day Special
The Georgetown Loop often celebrates Mother's Day with rides for mom. The railroad states: "Each mother and grandmother will receive a rose. The Parlor and Tahoe Class Cars will have a two-for-one mimosa deal on board for Mother’s Day Weekend – Buy one mimosa, get the second one free!"
About The Railroad
The Georgetown Loop Railroad is a historic and scenic narrow-gauge heritage railroad located in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, connecting the towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume. Renowned for its engineering marvels and picturesque landscapes, this railroad is a testament to 19th-century ingenuity and has become a beloved tourist attraction.
Historical Background
The railroad was originally completed in 1884 as part of the larger Colorado Central Railroad. It was conceived during the Colorado Silver Boom to transport silver ore and other minerals from the mines in the mountains to processing facilities and markets.
Constructed by the Union Pacific, the line is noted for its complex design to navigate the steep, rugged terrain between Georgetown and Silver Plume, which are separated by only about two miles in a straight line but have an elevation difference of over 600 feet.
Engineering Feats
The Georgetown Loop is celebrated for its impressive engineering solution to this geographical challenge. The railroad features a series of curves, switchbacks, bridges, and trestles to accommodate the steep grades, including the famous Devil’s Gate High Bridge.
This intricate construction gave the line its iconic "loop" shape, effectively allowing trains to ascend the grade by stretching the track distance to four and a half miles. This marvel of 19th-century engineering not only made it possible for trains to traverse the mountainous route but also provided breathtaking views for passengers.
Economic and Cultural Impact
In its heyday, the Georgetown Loop was a crucial component of Colorado's mining industry, facilitating the fast and efficient movement of ore. It also served passengers, contributing to the development of the tourist industry in the region. However, as the mining boom waned and automobiles became more popular, the railroad's significance gradually diminished. It ceased operations in 1938 and was subsequently dismantled.
Preservation and Modern Use
The revival of the Georgetown Loop began in the 1970s due to the efforts of historical preservation advocates and the Colorado Historical Society, now History Colorado. Reconstruction of the line started in 1973, and by 1984, the railroad was once again operational, serving as a tourist attraction. The fully restored railroad now offers seasonal excursions, typically operating from late spring through early autumn.
The Visitor Experience
Today, a ride on the Georgetown Loop offers a nostalgic journey through the stunning Alpine environment of the Rocky Mountains. The trip includes passage over the rehabilitated Devil’s Gate High Bridge and through the remnants of historic silver mines, with options for mine tours and gold panning experiences. Trains are pulled by steam or diesel locomotives, each contributing to the historical ambiance.
Visitors can enjoy various themed rides throughout the season, such as holiday and special event trains that offer unique on-board experiences. Coupled with the charm of the surrounding traditional mining towns, the railroad presents a captivating blend of natural beauty, history, and nostalgia.
With its rich history, engineering brilliance, and stunning vistas, the Georgetown Loop continues to captivate train enthusiasts, history buffs, and nature lovers alike. It stands as a testament to the remarkable achievements of its era and an enduring symbol of the American West’s rich industrial heritage.
Whether your mother is a fan of history, longs to explore scenic vistas, or simply enjoys a unique culinary experience, a Mother's Day train ride in Colorado promises a day filled with appreciation and adventure.
Each of these train rides combines the beauty of Colorado’s landscapes with charming history and personalized touches, ensuring that her special day is not only memorable but also deeply appreciated
