Essex Clipper Dinner Train (2026): Dates, Tickets & What to Expect

Connecticut’s seated dinner train is the Essex Clipper on the Essex Steam Train & Riverboat (Valley Railroad). Restored 1920s Pullman diners, vintage diesel power, and a four-course meal on a 2.5-hour Connecticut River valley run. The published fare is $129.99 per person. Guests must be 18 or older. Daytime steam-and-riverboat trips and the Christmas North Pole Express are different products.

About the Essex Steam Train
The Valley Railroad runs a remnant of the old Connecticut Valley line from the 1892 Essex Station at 1 Railroad Avenue through Deep River and Chester country. Steam coaches and the riverboat combination are the daytime brand. The Clipper is the evening dining service: diesel on the point, white tablecloths in the Pullmans, and a kitchen timed to the round trip. Murder-mystery dinners last appeared through the 2024 season and are not on the current Clipper calendar.

What the evening is like
Board at Essex Station 30 minutes before departure. The train leaves on time; late arrivals are not held. Fall 2026 Saturdays through September 26 are listed at 6:00 p.m. (sample window 6:00–8:30 p.m.). October weekends add 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. seatings. You sit in a 1920s Pullman diner while diesel power works the river valley. The $129.99 fare covers the ride, four courses, coffee or tea, tax, and meal gratuity. The cash bar is separate. No outside alcohol.
Tables are assigned, usually up to four. If two reservations need to sit together, say so in the booking notes. Entrée changes are not honored inside 48 hours. Specialty Friday dinners (Tuscany and similar) are a different ticket and a different price.
Wine & Chocolate is a pairing overlay on the Clipper consist—a three-course dinner plus a guest wine steward, not a separate railroad. When it is on the calendar it has sold around $159.99. Confirm whether your date is the regular Clipper or the pairing special.
Tickets & practical
- Booking: Advance and payment required. Tickets are non-refundable; transferable with 48 hours’ notice.
- Station / parking: 1 Railroad Avenue, Essex. Ticket window check-in before you walk to the diner.
- Age: 18 and older. No infants. Everyone sits in a dining chair.
