Essex Steam Train North Pole Express (2026): Dates, Tickets & Tips

Last revised: August 24, 2026

By: Adam Burns

Connecticut’s best-known Christmas train is the North Pole Express on the Essex Steam Train (Valley Railroad) from the 1892 Essex Station. The ride is about 90 minutes up the Connecticut River valley. Santa and Mrs. Claus, hot chocolate, sugar cookies, and pajamas are the formula. Tickets are online only. Full-car sales opened August 3, 2026; individual seats August 5. This is Essex’s own North Pole Express, not a licensed Polar Express event.

Essex Steam Train's North Pole Express

The Essex Steam Train's North Pole Express is a long-running, and popular tradition at the railroad that usually sells out. Essex Steam Train photo.

About the Essex Steam Train

The Valley Railroad runs a 12-mile remnant of the old Connecticut Valley line from Essex through Deep River and Chester. Summer and fall products pair steam coaches with a riverboat at Deep River. In November the railroad becomes a nighttime Christmas operation. Steam is the brand; confirm the power listed on your ticket if a specific locomotive matters to you.

What the Ride Is Like

Evening departures leave Essex Station on a tight 30-minute stagger on busy nights (2:00 through 8:00 p.m. on the fullest days). Each trip is its own 90-minute round trip. Guests are invited to wear festive pajamas. On board: sing-alongs, hot chocolate, sugar cookies, and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus. Children receive a small gift on select dates—read the 2026 ticket page for what is included in your class.

Coach is padded bench seating. First Class is an individual seat with an option to buy beverages. Premium First Class (sold as full and half cars on select times) adds upgraded bar options and a gift for each passenger. To sit in the same car, buy everyone on one order.

Classes of Service & Onboard

  • Coach: $60 weekdays / $70 weekends and Dec. 22–23
  • First Class: $95 weekdays / $105 weekends and Dec. 22–23
  • Premium First Class: $120; limited departures; often sold as full or half cars
  • Group sales (full, half, quarter cars and four-seat sections) opened August 3; leftover individual seats August 5
  • Essex says it holds back some seats from group sales so individual buyers still have a shot

Tickets & Practical Information

  • Booking: essexsteamtrain.com only. All sales final.
  • Station: 1 Railroad Avenue, Essex. Small town, limited parking on peak nights—arrive early.
  • Lodging: Essex, Old Saybrook, Chester, and the Connecticut River towns fill on December weekends.
  • Polar Express: Connecticut does not currently host a licensed Polar Express ride on this railroad. Licensed Polar locations are on the Polar hub (Rhode Island’s Blackstone Valley Polar is the nearest New England franchise host).

Tips for the Best Experience

  • If individual inventory looks thin, try a Tuesday or Wednesday in early December.
  • Have two or three departure times ready at checkout. Popular 4–6 p.m. trains go first.
  • The platform is cold. Pajamas still need a coat and closed-toe shoes.
  • Do not show up hoping for a box-office leftover. There is no walk-up window for this event.
