Chicago & North Western Diesel Roster (All-Time)

Published: October 20, 2026

By: Adam Burns

The Chicago & North Western bought diesels from all five major builders, and it kept many of them long after the catalog was closed. The table below counts 2,494 frames, each once. A renumber is the same locomotive. A rebuild of a locomotive already in the table is the same frame, and that row is not added again. Chicago Great Western, Minneapolis & St. Louis, and Omaha Road units that came onto the North Western are included.

Electro-Motive E units drew the streamlined passenger trains. E3s arrived for the Twin Cities 400 in 1939, after the rebuilt E-2 Pacifics had opened the schedule. E6s, E7s, E8s, and a small group of E9s followed, and the railroad also picked up secondhand E units. The 40th Street Shops in Chicago washed the E7s between runs. Commuter trains, the scoots, kept E and F units in the suburban pool into the 1970s.

Freight cab units were FTs, F3s, and F7s, plus FP7s. Four FTAs were rebuilt as FP9Ms, the same four frames. Chicago Great Western covered wagons came with the 1968 merger and stayed in freight service after the North Western had retired its own F units. Paul Schneider, writing in Trains in March 1996, noted that the railroad was one of the last still running diesels from Electro-Motive, General Electric, Alco, Baldwin, and Fairbanks-Morse.

Road switchers

The Geep was the branch-line and local locomotive. GP7s and GP9s arrived through the 1950s, including units built for the Omaha Road, the Minneapolis & St. Louis, and the Chicago Great Western. In the 1970s and 1980s the railroad rebuilt many of them as GP7Rs and GP9Rs. Those rows are the same frames. Rock Island GP7Rs and GP9Rs, and Union Pacific GP9s rebuilt after they arrived, are additional locomotives. Two GP7s, 1534 and 1596, became the HE-15 experiment and were later numbered 4200 and 4201.

Alco road switchers gathered on the secondary main line from Winona, Minnesota, to Rapid City, South Dakota. The Alco Line, the Huron main, was where RS-3s, RSD-4s, RSD-5s, RS-11s, C-425s, and RS-36s worked into the 1970s. The line, 826 miles including branches, was sold to the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern in 1986. RS-3 1613 was rebuilt with a 251 engine as RS3M 4250, the same frame. The diesel numbers 1617 and 1620, an RS-3 and an RSD-4 or RSD-5 of 1952, are not the steam Pacifics that had carried those numbers.

Six-axle Electro-Motive power grew with the coal trains: SD40s, SD40-2s, SD45s, SD50s, and SD60s, and a smaller group of SD38-2s and SD7s. Five SD7s, 1660–1664, were rebuilt as SD7Rs 6615–6619. SD18Rs were Southern and Union Pacific SD24s rebuilt before they reached the North Western, so they are additional frames. One former Pennsylvania SD45 was rebuilt in 1986 as SDCAT 6000, with a 12-cylinder Caterpillar 3612, and derated to 3,000 horsepower.

General Electric’s later road locomotives were the Powder River engines: C40-8s, C42-8s, C44-9Ws, and AC4400CWs. Eight road slugs, BU-32 through BU-39, were rebuilt from Burlington Northern, Northern Pacific, and Bessemer & Lake Erie boosters and are counted. Slugs rebuilt from North Western or Chicago Great Western locomotives are the same frames as those locomotives.

Switchers

Yard power came from every catalog: Electro-Motive NW and SW switchers, Alco S series, Baldwin VO and DS switchers, Fairbanks-Morse H10-44s and H12-44s, and a handful of small General Electric and Whitcomb units. Some of the oldest switchers were rebuilt into yard slugs. Those slugs are the same frames. The quantity column on a slug row is the slug’s own count. It is not added again when the switcher is already in the table.

Roster

The quantity column on the rows that are counted once sums to 2,494. Cab units are 389. Road switchers are 1,655. Switchers are 450. Where a printed serial is a list or a range, the quantity is that count. Where the serial cell is blank, the quantity is taken from the road numbers. Order is a separate column. The cells below do not print an order number, so the column is an em dash. A serial printed as an order-unit, such as 74662-1, stays in the serial column. A blank cell is an em dash.
