Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Diesel Roster (All-Time)

Published: October 22, 2026

By: Adam Burns

Electro-Motive switchers arrived in 1937, Baldwin center cabs took over the transfer jobs after the war, and six-motor Electro-Motive road switchers finished the road fleet. While the road was well-known for its EMD fleet in later years, early on it operated the previously mentioned Baldwins - such as VO-1000s, rare DT-6-6-2000s, DRS-6-6-1500, and even the unsuccessful DR-4-4-1500 cab design. In addition, it utilized a small fleet of Alcos such as RS2s, S1s, S2s, and the builder's very early High Hood designs.

Switchers

Dieselization opened with nine Electro-Motive SWs, 200–208. Numbers 200–205 are order E153, serials 628, 659, 661, 657, 627, and 652, December 1936 and January 1937. Number 200 arrived in 1937 and was the first diesel. Numbers 202 and 203 later became slugs T-3 and T-4, the same two frames. Numbers 206–208 are order E177, serials 692–694, September 1937.

Four Alco HH660s, 209–212, and five S-1s, 213–217, followed. The roster cards nickname 209 and 210 the Pie Wagons. Twelve S-2s, 451–462, were the first occupants of those numbers. Ten Baldwin VO-1000s, 475–484, and three VO-660s, 270–272, cover the Baldwin switchers. Number 270 later became slug T-5.

The Electro-Motive switcher fleet is the largest block. Twenty-seven SW1s, 220–246, were built new from 1940 to 1941, and SW1 249 was built in August 1949 as Canton 25 and purchased in November 1972. Two NW1s, 400 and 401, an HH900 numbered 402, and an EMC NC that took 402 after the HH900 was traded away, sit with fifty-two NW2s. The new NW2s run from 403 through 443. Twelve more NW2s were bought secondhand, including the first and second 408 and the Santa Fe locomotives that became the second 450, the second 451, and the second 452. The second 450 and the second 452 later became slugs T7 and T8.

Eight SW1200s, 300–307, were built new in 1960. Two former Union Pacific TR5s, 308 and 309, were purchased in 1978 and designated SW1200s. Fifteen more SW1200s, 310–324, came from the Missouri Pacific and the Kansas City Terminal. Two SW1001s, 444 and 445, order 4595, were purchased in March 1982, and a third SW1001 became the second 446. One SW900, one SW9, one SW8, one SW1000, and one SW1500 complete the switchers. The switchers are 160.

Center cabs

Baldwin’s first center-cab transfer locomotive was DT-6-6-2000 100, serial 72831, May 1946, nicknamed the Golden Goose. It had two De La Vergne 608NA engines, it had no end walkways, and it kept those engines until it was scrapped in November 1961. It was the railroad’s first road diesel.

Numbers 101–125, serials 73709–73733, were built from March through September 1948. Ten were rebuilt at Joliet with Baldwin 606A engines and renumbered 701-1, 702-1, 704-1, 705, 707, 708, 711, 717, 722, and 723. Fourteen were rebuilt at La Grange with EMD 567C engines, new dual control stands, and modified EMD switcher hoods, and renumbered 903, 906, 909, 910, 912, 913, 914, 915, 916, 919, 920, 921, 924, and 925. Number 103, renumbered 903 in February 1956, was the first of that program. Number 118 kept its as-built engines. Number 126, serial 74671, was Baldwin demonstrator 2001, built in February 1950 and purchased in November 1950. It was rebuilt in June 1961 as 726. The center cabs are 27 frames.

Road locomotives

Four Baldwin DR-4-4-1500s, demonstrators 6001A, 6001B, 6001A1, and 6001B1, were purchased in January 1950 as 700A, 700B, 701A, and 701B and sold to the Baltimore & Ohio in March 1955. Two Baldwin DRS-6-6-1500s, former Bessemer & Lake Erie 401 and 402, were purchased in March 1956 as 500 and 501. Ten Alco RS-2s, 800–809, were delivered in 1948 and 1949.

Three SD9s, 600–602, order 5526, were built new in March 1957. Seven more SD9s were purchased from the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range: 603–606 in February 1968, 612 and 613 in September 1987, and 614 in 1997. Two SD18s, 615 and 616, were purchased from the Missabe in 1997, and two more, 851 and 852, were purchased from the Bessemer & Lake Erie in March 1995. Five Missabe SD9s that carried 607, 608, 609, 610, and 611 were leased. They are outside this count. So is the second 454, an SW9 leased from the Lake Terminal and later returned.

Six SD38s, 650–655, order 7243, were built in January 1970. Thirteen SD38-2s were built new: 656–659 in January 1974, 660–664 in January 1975, and 665–668 in November 1975. Number 668 was delivered in white and lettered for the Bicentennial. Seven more SD38-2s were acquired, 669–675. Number 669 is former Bessemer & Lake Erie 891. Five GP38-2s, 700–704, were built in December 1972 and October 1973. The roster cards carry 700-2, 701-2, 702-2, and 704-2 so those numbers stay clear of the Baldwin cabs and the rebuilt center cabs.

Nine six-motor locomotives rebuilt on the Missabe, and bought afterward, took open numbers in the 800s: SDM 802, 804, 809, 811, 813, 814, 815, and 820, and SD18U 818. Each is a different frame from the RS-2 that had used 802, 804, or 809. Road locomotives, including the 27 center cabs, are 97.

Slug numbers are outside the 257. T-3, T-4, T-5, T7, and T8 are switchers already counted. T-1, T-2, and T-6 were slugs on this railroad, and T-6 later became hump cab CC1. Leased locomotives, including 750–752, are outside the count.
