Indiana Harbor Belt Diesel Roster (All-Time)

Published: October 25, 2026

By: Adam Burns

Electro-Motive switchers dieselized the Harbor. Eighty NW2s and forty SW7s were the heart of that fleet, in Pacemaker green and a lightning stripe livery that closely followed that of the New York Central's scheme, and the last steam fire was out by 1951.

Switchers

The NW2s are 80. Numbers 8715–8739 are Phase IV, 8740 and 8743 are Phase III, and 8774–8834 are Phase V. The number series skips 8741, 8742, and 8803–8810. Several of the 1948 and 1949 engines were traded to Electro-Motive in 1968, came back as NW2u locomotives, and took Penn Central numbers from 9158 through 9164. Numbers 8794–8802 went to the New York Central in 1966 and 1967. Number 8776 wore 1976 for the Bicentennial. Number 8834, serial 9480, was the last NW2 built. Numbers 8811 and 8814 were retired in July 2011 and traded for the 2140-series gensets.

The SW7s are 40. Numbers 8835–8866 are Phase I, and 8867–8879 are Phase II. The number series skips 8851–8855. Number 8835, serial 9460, was ordered as an NW2 and delivered as an SW7, the first SW7 built. Six of the early 1950 engines, 8836–8841, went to the Chicago River & Indiana in January 1965. Number 8877, in the photograph above, was sold for scrap in September 2002. Seven SW9s, 9002–9008, Phase II, followed in October 1953.

Fairbanks-Morse contributed two H10-44s and nine H20-44s, 11 frames. The H10-44s, class DES-14c, were renumbered 9104 and 9105 in October 1949 and sold to the New York Central the next February. Those are the same two engines. The H20-44s, classes DFT-1b, DFT-1c, and DFT-1e, went to the Central in 1949 and 1950.

The SW1500s are 28 frames, counted at the original 9200 numbers. GE in Mexico remanufactured most of them into the 1500 series between 2003 and 2005. Four of those, 1504, 1506, 1508, and 1514, were later converted to RP15BDF dual-fuel switchers, diesel and compressed natural gas. Numbers 9210 and 9218 kept their numbers and were wrecked. Numbers 9223–9227 went back to Electro-Motive and were sold to the Penn Central by November 1970.

Two SW1200s were leased and then purchased, so they are in the count. Number 2256 had been Milwaukee Road 2043. Number 2272 had been Southern Pacific 2272. Both were retired in June 2011 and traded for the 2140-series gensets.

Road locomotives

Six SD20s, 2920–2925, are Illinois Central rebuilds of SD18 and SD24 locomotives. They were leased in the 1990s and purchased in June 2007. Three were retired in 2012 and traded for the 2160-series gensets. Three were retired in 2020 and traded for the GP40-2LW locomotives.

The GP38-2s are five. Numbers 3801 and 3802 arrived in 1995. Numbers 3800, 5627, and 5629 arrived in 2021. Number 3800, serial 72627-27, was built in February 1973 as Penn Central 8066. It was rebuilt in August 2018 with a low short hood, upgraded to Dash-3 standards, and wears a Salute Our Troops scheme. The two SD38-2s, 3861 and 3862, are rebuilt SD40-2s, delivered in 2001. Number 3862 was retired in December 2012 and traded for the 2160-series gensets.

Thirteen GP40-2 and GP40-2LW locomotives complete the road fleet. Ten, 4010–4019, are former Southern Pacific engines remanufactured by GE in Mexico and delivered in 2002 and 2003. They had passed to the Union Pacific in 1996. Number 4010 had been Southern Pacific 3197, renumbered 7600, the Southern Pacific bicentennial unit. Number 4015 was wrecked and left the roster in 2020. Numbers 4020–4022 are wide-cab GP40-2LW locomotives, acquired in 2020, rebuilt by Metro East Industries, and originally Canadian National. They lack dynamic brakes and are paired with slugs 2020–2022.

Gensets

Four National Railway Equipment 3GS21B locomotives, 2140–2143, were acquired in 2011. Three of them, 2140, 2143, and 2141, were converted to slugs 2020, 2021, and 2022 in 2021. Those slugs are the same three frames. Number 2142 was scrapped in 2021.

Four 3GS21C locomotives, 2160–2163, were acquired in 2012 and purchased new. Each is rated at 2,100 horsepower from three 700-horsepower Cummins engines. Numbers 2160–2162 were built on Southern Pacific SD45T-2 frames, and 2163 was built on a Southern Pacific SD40T-2 frame, all at Mount Vernon, Illinois. They were retired in 2022 and scrapped in 2023.

Serials are build numbers. A later road number is the same frame.

Slugs and boosters

Slugs, powered boosters, and hump trailers are outside the 202. Where a slug was built from a locomotive already in the table, it is that same frame. Powered boosters PB4 and PB5 came from Illinois Central SW9s. Genset slugs 2020, 2021, and 2022 are 3GS21B locomotives 2140, 2143, and 2141.
