The Soo dieselized a grain railroad, then kept buying, often with cash, until the Milwaukee Road arrived with a second fleet and a debt the new locomotives could not pay off. This roster counts 786 locomotives, each frame once: 108 built new for the Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie, 97 built new for the Wisconsin Central, and 581 that came to the Soo Line Railroad after the 1961 merger, new or secondhand. The Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic owned 24 diesels of its own. They stay on the South Shore roster, RS-1s 100–107 included, along with the Baldwin road switchers and center-cabs that later carried Soo numbers 384–399.

The Soo liked a cab unit that could lead from either end of a pair, and it said so in the numbers. An F3 or an F7 or an FA-1 with a B or a C after the road number is still a cab on this roster. The letter is the railroad’s way of keeping a set together. The same habit shows up on the Wisconsin Central, whose 2200A, 2200B, and 2200C are three F3A cabs of September 1948, and whose 2220A–2223A and 2220B–2223B are eight FA-1s of the summer of 1949.

The Soo’s own first road diesels were F3A cabs 200A–204A and 200B–204B, ten locomotives, October 1947 through September 1948, and FA-1s 205A–211A and 205B–211B, fourteen locomotives, April 1948 through August 1949. F7A cabs followed, 212A–214A, 212B–214B, and 500B–503B, ten more, from March 1951 to July 1952. The Wisconsin Central’s F7A list is longer: 2201A through 2203C, a single 2204C, 2224A–2230A, 2224B–2230B, and 2500B–2501B, twenty-six cabs, May 1949 through August 1953. The two FP7s, 2500A and 2501A, are the passenger cabs, delivered across December 1954 and May 1957 beside the GP9s that shared their number series in a different slot. The B units numbered 2500B and 2501B are F7A cabs, a separate pair of frames.

Switchers came first, and they came small. The Wisconsin Central’s three NW1s, 2100–2102, were delivered in December 1938. The Soo followed in September and October 1939 with NW2s 300 and 301 and SW1 320. A General Electric 44-tonner, No. 330, arrived in June 1941, the one center-cab of that model. Baldwin built the rest of the early Soo switcher fleet: VO-1000 No. 310 in October 1945, DS-4-4-1000s 311 and 312 in June 1949, and S-12s 313 and 314 in March 1952. Fairbanks-Morse H12-44s 315–319, five locomotives, July 1952 through December 1954, were the only engines of that builder on either pre-1961 roster.

Alco’s Wisconsin Central switchers were S-2s 2103–2107, August 1942 through November 1946, and a single S-4, 2116, in May 1952. The end-cab Electro-Motive switchers filled in around them: NW2 2108 in August 1948, SW9s 2111–2115 and 2117–2119 from November 1952 to September 1953, and SW1200s 2120–2127 in January 1955. The Soo’s own SW1200s were 321–328, December 1954 and January 1955.

The later switchers were inherited. Minneapolis, Northfield & Southern SW1200s 30–35 became Soo 1200–1205, and SW1500s 36–37 became Soo 1400–1401. Control of that railroad passed on June 2, 1982. Milwaukee Road SW1200s became Soo 1206–1222, seventeen locomotives, and Milwaukee MP15ACs became Soo 1500–1563, sixty-four locomotives built in December 1975 and March 1976. The two former Minneapolis, Northfield & Southern SD39s, 40 and 41, came in the same 1982 control. This roster leaves them under those numbers.
The first road switchers were a mixed lot, which fitted a railroad of branches and ore docks as much as a railroad of main lines. Baldwin DRS-4-4-1500s 360–367, eight locomotives, November 1947 through January 1948, and AS-16s 379 and 380 in August 1951, were the Soo’s Baldwin road power. Alco RSC-2s 368–371, June through November 1949, and RSC-3s 372–374 in November 1950, rode on A1A trucks for the lighter rail. The Wisconsin Central’s single RSC-3 was 2380, July 1951. Four RS-1s, 350–353, closed the Soo’s Alco buying in December 1954. The Wisconsin Central had already taken nine RS-1s, 2360–2368, from March 1950 to March 1952.
Electro-Motive’s Geeps replaced the argument. Soo GP7s 375–378 and 381–383, seven locomotives, September 1950 through July 1952, left 379 and 380 to the Baldwin AS-16s. GP9s 400–414 and 550–558, twenty-four locomotives, December 1954 through May 1956, were the Soo’s own. The Wisconsin Central’s were GP9s 2400–2413 and 2550–2556, twenty-one locomotives, December 1954 through May 1957, plus a single SD9, 2381, in December 1954. GP9 2556 had been used in passenger service. GP9 2411 was one of the chop-nose rebuilds of 1963.

The Soo Line Railroad, the company of January 1, 1961, bought its own road freight power in a clean series. Two Alco RS-27s, 415 and 416, came in April 1963 and were the last new Alcos. Then it was Electro-Motive, and for one order General Electric. GP30s 700–721, twenty-two locomotives, March through June 1963. GP35s 722–731, ten, August 1964 through May 1965. GP40s 732–735, four, March 1967. U30Cs 800–809, ten, April through June 1968, the Soo’s General Electric road locomotives. SD40s 736–756, twenty-one, May 1969 through May 1971. SD40-2s 757–789 and 6600–6623, fifty-seven, March 1972 through August 1984. GP38-2s 790–799 and 4410–4452, fifty-three, September 1977 through April 1983.

The SD60s were the last big order that still looked like the old Soo, a railroad that bought what it needed and paid for it. SD60s 6000–6057, fifty-eight locomotives, July 1987 through November 1989, and SD60Ms 6058–6062, five wide-nose cabs, November 1989, arrived after the Milwaukee purchase had already changed the balance sheet. Three GP30s rebuilt with Caterpillar prime movers, numbered 4300–4302 the second time around, former Union Pacific locomotives, are dated March 1990.

The Milwaukee Road merger of January 1, 1986 put 311 locomotives on this list. They were not renumbered into the 700s. The Soo kept them in the blocks it assigned: SW1200s 1206–1222, MP15ACs 1500–1563, GP20s 4300–4335, GP38-2s 4500–4515, GP40s 4604–4640, GP40-2s 4641–4660, SD10s 6100–6120, SDL39s 6200–6208 and 6240–6241, and SD40-2s 6300–6388. The SD10s are the rebuilt Milwaukee SD7s and SD9s. The dates on those rows are the dates carried on the roster for the frames, which for a secondhand locomotive is the original build date.
Twenty more frames came from somewhere other than the Milwaukee or the Minneapolis, Northfield & Southern switcher fleet. Two GP39-2s, 4598 and 4599, were built in 1978 for Kennecott Copper. Six SD40s, 6400–6405, were Kansas City Southern locomotives of June 1970. Five SD40As, 6406–6410, Illinois Central frames of January 1970, arrived through Helm. SD40 6411, an April 1969 Baltimore & Ohio locomotive, arrived through Morrison-Knudsen. SD40-B 6450 is a Burlington Northern frame of October 1971. SD45s 6491 and 6492 were built as St. Louis-San Francisco 930 and 910. The three Caterpillar GP30s make up the rest of the twenty.
The quantity column adds to 786. A blank builder number or order is empty. The date on a secondhand row is the build date carried for that frame. Minneapolis, Northfield & Southern SW1200 serials are the six construction numbers of 30–35 as a group. The South Shore’s 24 diesels are on that railroad’s page.
