Florida Train Rides
Florida Scenic Train Rides (2026): A Complete Guide
Last revised: August 10, 2026
By: Adam Burns
Florida’s tourist-rail scene is smaller than Pennsylvania or New York—but the subtropical climate keeps many attractions open nearly year-round. Expect freight railroads that host dinner and murder-mystery trains, state railroad museums with multi-mile rides, agricultural heritage specials through sugar country, family miniature railroads at Largo and Fort Myers Lakes Park, a restored Tampa streetcar, and the world’s most famous theme-park steam railroad at Walt Disney World. This guide covers vacation and tourism destinations only.
US Sugar completed the restoration of Florida East Coast 4-6-2 #148 in 2020 and runs Sugar Express excursions several times a year out of Clewiston, in this case for the city's annual Sugar Cane Festival. Here at Keela, Florida on March 13, 2026, the eastbound excursion waits for a switch to be thrown. Doug Kroll photo.
Intercity travel: Amtrak (and Brightline for South Florida corridor service).

State Rail History
Florida’s first railroad was the mule-powered Tallahassee Railroad (1837), a 22-mile, five-foot-gauge line from Tallahassee to St. Marks on the Gulf. For decades afterward, poorly capitalized three-foot logging and extractive lines poked into a sparsely settled, swampy peninsula (George Hilton, American Narrow Gauge Railroads).
Modern Florida railroading arrives with Henry M. Flagler and the Florida East Coast Railway. As the FEC pushed south—reaching Miami on April 15, 1896—Flagler built resorts that created traffic for the railroad and turned the east coast into a winter destination. By the mid-1920s FEC handled roughly a billion ton-miles and nearly doubled revenues in a short boom; double-tracking Jacksonville–Miami and the Moultrie Cutoff followed. Full FEC story: Florida East Coast Railway.
Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line (later Seaboard Coast Line / CSX lineage) dominated the peninsula’s west and center, with streamliners remaining popular into the 1960s. Southern, L&N, Frisco, and others touched the northern tier. Mileage peaked above 5,200 in the 1920s (Stover); AAR figures in recent years put Florida near 2,800 miles still in service. Tourist railroads and museums keep the heritage side of that map alive for visitors who never see a pure freight main line.
Tourist Railroads & Excursions
Seminole Gulf Railway
Based in Fort Myers, Seminole Gulf is a working freight short line that has hosted popular excursions since the early 1990s. Day trains show southwest Florida scenery north of Fort Myers; the signature product is the Murder Mystery Dinner Train—dinner, show, and climate-controlled coaches. Streamlined F units with B&O and Milwaukee Road heritage power multi-car consists named for local islands (Sanibel, Marco, Gasparilla, Captiva).

Florida Railroad Museum (Florida Gulf Coast Railroad Museum)
At Parrish (near the St. Petersburg corridor), this official state railroad museum traces roots to 1981 (state recognition 1984). About seven miles of former Seaboard Air Line trackage support excursions between Parrish and Willow behind RS3, GP7, or 44-ton power, with open-air or air-conditioned cars, caboose rentals, cab rides, and group rates.
Gold Coast Railroad Museum
Open since 1956 on former Naval Air Station Richmond grounds in Miami, Gold Coast holds an impressive steam and diesel collection—including FEC 4-6-2s #153 and #113 and other industrial steam—plus short on-site train and cab rides. Day Out With Thomas and Polar Express-style events dominate peak family seasons.
Sugar Express (U.S. Sugar / Clewiston)
From the historic Clewiston depot, the Sugar Express markets agricultural and educational excursions through sugarcane fields and wetlands—a side of Florida far from beaches and theme parks. Narration covers sugar farming and harvest; during the October–March harvest window, mill tours may be paired with the train. Historic locomotives and cars on display reinforce the industrial-rail story. Confirm the current public calendar before planning around a specific date.
Walt Disney World Railroad
At the Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney’s park railroad remains a 1.5-mile, three-foot-gauge steam loop using restored Ferrocarriles Unidos de Yucatán power (including 2-6-0 #2 Lilly Belle, 4-4-0 #4 R.O. Disney, and 4-6-0s #1 and #3). Park admission and operating status govern access; for sheer annual ridership it is Florida’s busiest rail experience.
Roster note (all operational when the railroad is running): #1 W.E. Disney (Baldwin 1925), #2 Lilly Belle (Baldwin 1928), #3 Roger E. Broggie (Baldwin 1925), #4 R.O. Disney (Baldwin 1916).
TECO Line Streetcar System
Tampa’s restored downtown streetcar operates more than two miles with heritage Birney-type cars—urban rail heritage rather than a rural scenic line, but a genuine operating electric railway for visitors.
Largo Central Railroad
A 1.2-mile miniature railroad through Largo Central Park, run by the LCRR Club with impressive all-volunteer consists. Typical public pattern: first weekend of each month, roughly 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; arrive early for lines near closing. Check Facebook/website before you go.
Railroad Museum of South Florida (Lakes Park & Gulf Railroad)
In Lakes Regional Park (south Fort Myers), the Railroad Museum of South Florida combines a depot-style interpretive center and outdoor full-size pieces (including a cosmetically restored ACL 0-6-0 and SAL caboose) with a popular 1/8-scale miniature railroad—about a one-mile, roughly 15-minute loop through a train village of circa-1950 Southwest Florida scenes, with tunnel, trestle, and lakeside park scenery. Treat it as a family park ride plus local rail history, not a full-size scenic railroad; it pairs naturally with a Seminole Gulf dinner or day train on the same Fort Myers trip.

Closed or Defunct Note
The former Orlando & Northwestern Railway / Royal Palm Railway Experience (Tavares–Mount Dora / Eustis-area tourist product) is no longer a bookable public scenic railroad. Do not plan Central Florida trips around O&NW without verifying a live successor calendar.
Planning Tips
- Southwest Florida vacation: Seminole Gulf for dinner theater or daytime scenic; add the Lakes Park miniature train for a family half-day
- Tampa Bay: Florida Railroad Museum + TECO streetcar + Largo miniature for a multi-stop day
- Miami / South Florida: Gold Coast museum; couple with Brightline if you are already corridor-traveling
- Interior / agri-tourism: Sugar Express when harvest tours are advertised
- Orlando parks: Magic Kingdom railroad only with park tickets and open operating status
- Florida is not a classic fall-foliage destination; plan around heat, summer storms, and holiday specials instead
