Great Smoky Mountains Railroad
North Carolina Scenic Train Rides At The GSMR!
Published: January 23, 2026
By: Adam Burns
The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad (GSMR) has become one of the flagship heritage rail experiences in the Southeast. Based in Bryson City, North Carolina, the railroad invites visitors to trade traffic for trestles—rolling past river gorges, mountain coves, and deep-green forests on an active rail line with a story that reaches back to Southern Railway’s heyday.
What makes GSMR especially compelling is how it blends authentic railroad history with a modern excursion program: classic coaches (some dating back to the early 20th century), open-air cars made for photographers, seasonal steam power on select dates, and a calendar packed with themed trains that can turn a simple ride into a full-on event.
From the “Murphy Branch” to a Modern Tourist Railroad
The tracks GSMR operates were historically part of Southern Railway’s Murphy Branch—a crucial mountain route that tied western North Carolina to the outside world, carrying passengers, mail, and freight through rugged Appalachian terrain. As highways expanded and rail passenger service faded, many secondary lines faced an uncertain future. In the Smokies region, however, scenic geography became a new kind of asset: what once challenged railroaders began attracting travelers.
According to the railroad’s own historical overview, by the late 1980s the pieces came together to launch an excursion operation, with multiple partners working to establish what was then called the Great Smoky Mountains Railway. Passenger service began with an emphasis on the spectacular scenery between Dillsboro and Nantahala, and the experience proved popular quickly—helped by the fact that the route showcases a side of the Smokies most visitors never see from the highway.
In 2000 the operation adopted the name Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, leaning into the strong regional identity of the national park and surrounding mountain towns.
Bryson City: The Heart of the Operation
If there’s a “front porch” to GSMR, it’s Bryson City—a walkable mountain town that pairs perfectly with an excursion day. The depot area functions as both a gateway and an attraction, with visitors arriving early to browse the gift shop, watch the consist being prepared, and soak in the pre-departure anticipation that only a train ride seems to generate.
While GSMR has roots in Dillsboro, the railroad ultimately shifted the center of gravity to Bryson City. (Historically, there were town-level disputes that helped drive changes in how operations were headquartered and marketed.) The result today is a railroad experience that feels closely tied to Bryson City’s downtown life—restaurants, shops, and seasonal festivals dovetail neatly with the excursion schedule.
The Two Signature Scenic Excursions
GSMR’s schedule varies by season, but its core identity is built around two primary daytime excursions—each with a distinct personality.
Nantahala Gorge Excursion
This is the headliner for pure Smokies drama. Departing from Bryson City, the Nantahala Gorge Excursion is described by GSMR as a 4½-hour round trip covering 44 miles, featuring a layover at the gorge and extended running alongside Fontana Lake and the Nantahala River. Depending on the date, trains may run behind steam or diesel power, which can completely change the feel of the experience—diesel for steady mountain railroading, steam for that echoing-whistle, cinders-in-the-air time travel vibe.
For riders, the magic is in the variety: reflective stretches along the lake, tight river bends, and deep cuts where the mountains seem to close in. If you’re writing about GSMR for railfans, this is also the excursion that best communicates the line’s original purpose—railroading as a practical way to conquer difficult terrain.
Tuckasegee River Excursion
If Nantahala is the dramatic mountain epic, the Tuckasegee River Excursion is the relaxing countryside cruise. GSMR notes this trip runs about four hours, traveling 32 miles round trip from Bryson City to Dillsboro and back, including passage through the 836-foot Cowee Tunnel—a memorable mid-ride highlight that punctuates the river scenery.
This excursion is often ideal for families and casual visitors: it’s scenic, comfortable, and it pairs well with the Dillsboro layover experience (shopping, strolling, grabbing a bite). For rail-history storytelling, it’s also a perfect “gateway” ride—short enough to feel easy, yet still substantial enough to feel like a real rail journey rather than a quick loop.
Choosing Your Ride: Classes of Service and Open-Air Options
One of GSMR’s strengths is that it lets you tailor the experience to your style—photography-forward, comfort-first, or somewhere in the middle.
On the general experience side, GSMR describes restored vintage coaches (some dating back as early as the 1920s), and also offers Open Air Gondola seating made from converted cars—designed for panoramic views and that wind-in-your-face, camera-ready experience.
For many visitors, the choice comes down to a simple tradeoff:
- Open-air cars: best for photos, sounds, and immersion—especially when the train is hugging the river.
- Enclosed climate-controlled options: best for comfort (especially in peak summer heat or cooler shoulder seasons), with big windows and a more “sit back and enjoy” feel.
The railroad’s excursion pages lay out multiple service tiers (including open-air, coach-style, and premium dining-oriented options), and the availability of certain classes can vary by season and event.
Special Events
Beyond the scenic daytime runs, GSMR has built a reputation for theme trains—the kind of events that become annual traditions for families, date nights, and group outings.
THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride
GSMR’s holiday season is anchored by THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride, which the railroad introduced in the mid-2000s and has continued to grow into one of the region’s signature winter attractions. The concept is exactly what it sounds like: a storybook holiday experience staged on rails, based on the well-known theme and timed around the late-year season when Bryson City turns festive.
In practical terms, this event has also been a major economic engine—bringing large crowds to Bryson City during a time of year when mountain tourism can otherwise be quieter.
Adult-focused specialty rides (wine/spirits)
GSMR also runs adult-oriented “experience” trains—events built around tastings, narration, and a more social atmosphere. Examples include offerings like an Uncorked wine experience and Spirits on the Rail, which appear on the railroad’s ticketing and schedule pages as dedicated themed departures.
These rides are worth highlighting because they show how GSMR has diversified beyond “scenic ride only” into curated excursions that feel closer to an evening out—especially for couples or groups looking for something more structured than a standard round trip.
Why You Should Visit
Plenty of tourist railroads offer a pleasant ride. GSMR stands out because it operates on a route that still feels like real mountain railroading—with geography doing the storytelling. The railroad also functions as a living connection to the Smokies region’s transportation history: how communities were linked, how goods moved, and why rail lines followed river valleys and threaded gaps through the mountains.
Just as importantly, GSMR is a modern example of how heritage rail can stay relevant. By pairing signature scenic runs (Nantahala and Tuckasegee) with seasonal events, multiple service classes, and occasional steam power, the railroad keeps its calendar fresh without losing its historical core.
