Missouri 'Wine Tasting' Train Rides
Published: May 11, 2026
By: Adam Burns
Nestled between fields of feldspar-filled soil and the rolling hills famous in Mark Twain novels, Missouri, often considered the gateway to the West, has a burgeoning wine industry that's becoming a must-visit for wine enthusiasts.
The fusion of scenic vistas, historical charm, and exquisite wines is beautifully encapsulated in Missouri's wine by rail experiences. These excursions are an alluring blend of nostalgia and nature, perfect for those seeking to savor the state's viticultural offerings uniquely.
There is currently only location in the state offering wines and spirits aboard their trains, the Iron Mountain Railway (formerly the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern Railway).
The Historical Allure of Wine Tasting Trains
Missouri's railroad history is deeply entrenched in the passage of time, tracing back to the late 1800s when trains were the lifeblood of commerce and travel.
Today, this legacy continues in a different guise: as a conduit for showcasing local wines. The Iron Mountain Railway capitalizes on this historical footing, converting vintage train cars into luxurious tasting salons where passengers can indulge in both the terroir of Missouri wines and the sweeping landscapes rushing by.
The Scenic Missouri Landscape
Journeying through Missouri's countryside by train presents an opportunity to absorb the state's natural splendor in a manner unparalleled by any other locale.
The Missouri River Valley, Hermann Wine Trail, and Augusta—America's first designated wine region—are just a few of the stunning routes explored on these picturesque journeys.
Onboard, passengers are treated to sprawling views of lush vineyards, expanses of farmland, and charming rural towns, each framed by the season, whether it’s the vibrant greens of summer or the warm ambers of autumn.
Highlighting Missouri's Wine Regions
Augusta and Hermann Regions: Augusta holds the distinction of being the United States' first American Viticultural Area (AVA), recognized for its perfect grape-growing conditions. Nearby Hermann—famously known as Missouri’s wine capital—offers a historic charm with its German roots and architecture prominently displayed.
Wine tasting trains visiting these areas often include stops at renowned wineries and charming vineyards, allowing passengers to step off and experience wine tours and tastings led by local sommeliers and vintners.
St. Louis Vicinity: Often departing from hubs like St. Louis, wine-tasting trains here take on a different rhythm. Here, passengers can explore hidden gems tucked around the outskirts of the city, blending urban and rural wine experiences.
These tours often include trips through the scenic surroundings of the region's vineyards, with tasting sessions focusing primarily on locally loved varietals like Norton—the state's signature grape—and Vignoles, both of which thrive in Missouri’s unique climate.
The Iron Mountain Railway is a historic excursion train experience located in Jackson, Missouri. This railroad - utilizing a 6-mile section of a former Missouri Pacific branch - offers a nostalgic journey back in time, allowing passengers to experience the charm and allure of classic train travel. The excursion is renowned for its scenic routes, leisurely pace, and enriching storytelling, showcasing the rich railroad history of the region.
Originally established in the late 19th century as part of the booming rail industry, the railway played a pivotal role in the economic development of the region, facilitating trade and transportation. Today, this excursion line maintains and celebrates that legacy. Passengers can ride in vintage railcars, complete with period-appropriate decor, providing an authentic historical atmosphere.
While the StLIM&S did not offer any official wine tasting experiences aboard their trains they did offer alcoholic beverages and wine from a local winery for their "Chuck Wagon Dinner" trains and murder mystery trains.
Final Thoughts
Wine tasting trains offer a unique melding of cultural history, natural beauty, and modern indulgence. As the train whistles echo through the valley, passengers are treated not only to the vistas beyond the train's windows but also to the aromas and flavors of the state's thriving wine industry.
Whether one is a seasoned wine aficionado or a curious newcomer, these train journeys encapsulate Missouri's burgeoning viticultural scene, with a perfect backdrop that celebrates the essence of this remarkable state.
Missouri's wine-tasting trains provide an unforgettable experience. With expertly curated wines, stunning landscapes, and the nostalgic allure of vintage train travel, they truly offer an unparalleled journey for anyone eager to explore the winery landscapes of the Show-Me State.
