Presented below is the Katy's public timetables presented in the August, 1952 issue of The Official Guide Of The Railways.
The Missouri Kansas Texas Railroad (MKT or Katy), established in 1865, was crucial in advancing the frontier and fostering economic growth in the central United States.
Originally named the Union Pacific Railway Company Southern Branch, it was renamed the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railway in 1870 when its vast expansion plan aimed to reach Texas from Junction City, Kansas; thereby setting roots in Missouri, Kansas, and Texas.
Interestingly, the MKT experienced multiple corporate iterations, including a reorganization in 1923 as the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. By the 1980s, Katy encountered financial challenges and eventually merged with Union Pacific in 1988.
Best known for its distinctive red logo featuring the letters MKT, the railroad also held a significant place in labor history.
In 1886, it was involved in the Great Southwest Railroad Strike, which had lasting implications for labor union movements. Despite its 1988 disappearance, the memory of the iconic MKT lives on - a beacon of railroad evolution and a testament to America's transportation history.
