New Jersey, often celebrated for its vibrant history and stunning beaches, boasts a hidden gem that perfectly blends nostalgia with indulgence: ice cream trains.
These delightful excursions through picturesque landscapes not only offer a unique way to experience the Garden State but also serve up scoops of happiness in the form of delicious ice cream. Let's explore this charming diversion that attracts families, couples, and train enthusiasts alike.
The romantic allure of rail travel is undeniable. There is something very nostalgic about the rhythmic chugging of an engine and the panoramic views unfolding before your eyes.
Trains are a symbol of adventure and exploration, echoing the historic journeys of the past. In New Jersey, they are a vital component of the transportation system, but they also serve a more whimsical purpose—providing a unique venue for enjoying one of America’s favorite treats: ice cream.
Ice cream trains are especially popular with families looking for an engaging and fun-filled day out. They offer an ideal setting for children to experience the thrill of train travel while enjoying their favorite frozen treats. Parents, on the other hand, appreciate the blend of education and entertainment, which provides a wholesome family outing that appeals to both young and old.
An SMS Rail Lines property - a short line freight carrier that has been operating in New Jersey since 1994 - this heritage railroad journey kicked off in 2022. Historically, the operation makes use of around 16 miles of restored Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines tracks, linking Swedesboro, Woodstown, and Mannington. Currently, the railroad provides 32-mile round trips with select trains.
Being relatively new, their excursions are somewhat limited. Nonetheless, they offer a handful of trips powered by historic Baldwin diesel locomotives, alongside a rail biking adventure.
Looking ahead, their primary objective is to restore various pieces of rolling stock for their guests to enjoy. This includes a Reading caboose already in service and a former private office car (passenger car). Additionally, they are diligently working on restoring an original steam locomotive, the 0-6-0 #9, which made a comeback to operation in 2023.
This locomotive, crafted for the U.S. Army by the American Locomotive Company in 1942, has a rich history. It previously resided at the New Hope Railroad in New Hope, Pennsylvania, and had been out of action since the 1970s.
The Woodstown Central combines a celebration of dad with the enjoyment of frozen sweet treats via the "Father's Day Ice Cream Special." During the trip, which lasts between 50-75 minutes, guests can enjoy ice cream from Woodstown's own Cream Valley Custard.
Ice cream trains are more than just a ride through the countryside—they are an invitation to step back in time and indulge in simple pleasures. Offering a unique blend of leisure, learning, and lots of delicious ice cream, these rides create lasting memories and bring smiles to passengers of all ages. Whether you’re a local looking for a special day out or a visitor seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure, ice cream train rides promise a delightful experience that captures the essence of New Jersey’s charm and hospitality.
