Every second Sunday in May, families across New Jersey seek out new and exciting ways to celebrate Mother's Day, striving to make this day special for the most important woman in their lives. Woodstown Central Railroad

History

The history of this rail line can be traced back to the 19th century. The 28-mile link between Woodbury and Salem was known as the Salem Branch, operated by the West Jersey Railroad and originally stretching to 37.5 miles.

By September 1, 1885, the West Jersey Railroad II was incorporated, streamlining its corporate operations. Then, on December 31, 1887, three railways, including the Salem Branch Railroad Company (with the 1.25-mile Glassworks Branch), merged into the newly formed West Jersey Railroad III.

As part of a major restructuring by the Pennsylvania Railroad, the West Jersey Railroad Company was restructured into the "Atlantic Division," which was part of the "New Jersey Division" within the broader "Eastern Region," all under the Pennsylvania Railroad. This change took effect on June 20, 1920.

The system was later merged into the Pennsyvlania-Reading Seashore Lines on June 25, 1933, southern New Jersey's commuter rail operation jointly owned by the PRR and Reading Railroad.

Following Penn Central's 1968 creation and subsequent bankruptcy in 1970, later owner Conrail intended to abandon this segment in 1984. It was later purchased by Salem County to preserve rail service and eventually wound up under Southern Railroad of New Jersey's operation by 1995.

The Woodstown Central was formed by SMS Rail Lines to restore part of the Salem Branch for excursion service, opening to the public in 2022.

Today, the Woodstown Central is renowned for its immersive excursion experiences which transport passengers back in time. Offering a diverse range of themed rides, the railroad caters to families, history buffs, and train enthusiasts. From scenic rides showcasing New Jersey’s stunning fall foliage to festive holiday excursions, the railroad provides something for everyone.

During Mother's Day the railroad hosts the Mother's Day Express, hosted within a beautifully restored dining car from the 1930s. During the 75-minute trip guests can enjoy either a charcuterie board or a continental brunch.
