Tennessee Easter Train Rides: A Complete Guide
Published: March 4, 2025
By: Adam Burns
Spring in Tennessee offers a brilliant display of blooming dogwoods, vibrant fields, and picturesque landscapes. It's also a perfect time to enjoy scenic train rides, especially those themed around Easter.
This guide will introduce you to some of the best Easter-related trips you can experience in Tennessee, blending the beauty of the season with the charm of historic railways. Currently, only one organization hosts such events, the Tennessee Central Railway Museum which operates popular excursions throughout the year.
Tennessee Central Railway Museum
The Tennessee Central Railway Museum (TCRM) is a heritage railroad and museum located in Nashville, Tennessee. It is dedicated to preserving the history and heritage of the railroad industry in Tennessee and the southeastern United States.
The museum's main attraction is its collection of vintage railcars, locomotives, and railroad memorabilia, which collectively offer a glimpse into the past when rail travel and transportation played a pivotal role in economic and community development.
In 2025 they will host the Easter Bunny Excursion Train where kids and their families can enjoy a 90-minute ride to Watertown and take part in an Easter Egg Hunt while visiting the local restaurants and storefronts.
Overview
Founded in 1989, the museum operates on tracks owned by the Nashville and Eastern Railroad Authority. The TCRM is managed by a dedicated team of volunteers and rail enthusiasts who are passionate about educating the public on the history of the Tennessee Central Railway and its impact on the region. The museum not only showcases static displays but also offers themed train excursions throughout the year, enhancing the educational and entertainment experience for visitors of all ages.
Among the most popular attractions are the museum’s excursion trains. These rides are designed to recreate the experience of traveling by rail in a bygone era. The excursions range from short rides to day-long adventures, often with seasonal themes such as the "Santa Excursion Trains" during the holiday season or fall foliage rides in autumn. These trips are not only scenic but are also filled with historical storytelling that enriches the journey, as knowledgeable guides share fascinating insights about the trains and routes.
The museum's collection features several antique steam and diesel locomotives as well as passenger cars and cabooses that have been meticulously restored. Educational programs and volunteer opportunities allow visitors to get involved with restoration projects and learn about the engineering and craftsmanship involved in railway operation and maintenance. This hands-on approach is crucial for preserving skills and knowledge about historic railway preservation and enhances the museum's educational mission.
TCRM is also home to an extensive collection of artifacts related to the Tennessee Central Railway and other regional railroads. This includes a variety of railroad tools, signage, and historical documents. The museum has a small research library where enthusiasts and researchers can delve into railroad archives, offering valuable resources for those interested in the detailed history of rail transportation in Tennessee.
The Tennessee Central Railway once served as a vital corridor connecting Nashville with eastern parts of the state and regions beyond, including Louisville, Kentucky. Although the original company ceased operations in the early 1960s, the legacy lives on through the museum's efforts, commemorating the enduring impact of railroads on the area's economic and social development.
By visiting the Tennessee Central Railway Museum, guests have the opportunity to experience a vital piece of American history. Whether riding a classic train through the scenic Tennessee countryside or exploring the various exhibits and collections, visitors gain an appreciation for the transformative power railroads had on regions across the United States. The museum not only preserves the legacy of the Tennessee Central Railway but also serves as a testament to the volunteer spirit and passion for preserving history for future generations.
Tennessee offers a charming selection of scenic train rides, particularly enchanting when coupled with Easter festivities. From the historical ambiance of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum to the breathtaking heights of the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway, these journeys promise to enhance your spring with beauty, nostalgia, and family fun.
Whether you're a local or just visiting the Volunteer State, these train rides provide a memorable way to enjoy Easter, with activities that appeal to children and scenery that captivates everyone. Be sure to check operating times and any special COVID-related policies that may affect bookings, and book early to ensure you and your family don’t miss out on these delightful experiences. Happy Easter and happy riding!
