Amtrak’s Adirondack – Complete Scenic Route Guide 2026

Published: July 17, 2026

By: Adam Burns

The Adirondack is Amtrak’s daily daytime train between New York City and Montreal—and one of the finest scenic rides in the eastern United States. In roughly 11 hours you follow the Hudson River, climb into upstate New York, run between the Adirondack Mountains and Lake Champlain, then cross into Canada for arrival at Montreal’s Central Station.

This 2026 guide covers the route, the best viewing stretches, border practicalities, and tips for a smooth international day trip by rail.

Amtrak Adirondack along scenic waterway in upstate New York

Water is the constant companion of the Adirondack—first the Hudson, later Lake Champlain—making this one of Amtrak’s most photogenic eastern routes. Doug Kroll photo.

Route Overview

The Adirondack covers about 381 miles. Northbound trains leave New York (Moynihan Train Hall / Penn Station complex) in the morning and are scheduled into Montreal in the evening. Southbound trains reverse the pattern with a morning Montreal departure and evening New York arrival.

Major stops include Yonkers, Croton-Harmon, Poughkeepsie, Albany–Rensselaer, Schenectady, Saratoga Springs, Fort Edward, Whitehall, Ticonderoga, Westport, Port Kent (seasonal ferry connection patterns can vary), Plattsburgh, Rouses Point, and St-Lambert before Montreal Central Station.

Travel time is commonly about 10.5–12 hours depending on operating conditions and border processing. This is a daytime, coach-focused train—no sleeping cars.

Best Scenic Sections

  1. Hudson River valley (New York City to Albany) — Palisades, river estates, bridges, and classic Empire Corridor scenery. Sit on the left side northbound for the best river views on many segments.
  2. Saratoga and upper Hudson country — Transition from capital-region railroading into true upstate landscapes.
  3. Adirondack foothills and Champlain Valley — Mountains to the west, water and Vermont’s Green Mountains across the lake to the east. This is the stretch that earns the train its reputation.
  4. Lake Champlain shoreline — Long water views, small lakeside communities, and excellent fall color in late September–October.
  5. Approach to Montreal — St. Lawrence / urban arrival payoff after a full day of scenery.

Season tip: Peak fall foliage along the Hudson and Lake Champlain is a major draw. Summer offers long daylight; spring can be quiet and green; winter is starkly beautiful but can bring weather delays.

2026 Practical Information

  • Frequency: Daily in both directions
  • Travel time: Approximately 11 hours (varies)
  • Distance: About 381 miles
  • Equipment: Amfleet coaches and a café car (typical; confirm current consist)
  • Classes: Coach (Business Class may appear on connecting Empire Corridor patterns—check your ticket)
  • Border: United States–Canada crossing with customs/immigration procedures; valid travel documents required for all passengers
  • Peak demand: Summer weekends, Canadian holiday periods, and October foliage dates

Always verify the latest schedule and any service advisories on Amtrak.com. Cross-border trains can experience extended dwell times for inspections.

Border Crossing & Documents

Because the Adirondack is an international train, every passenger needs appropriate documentation to enter Canada and re-enter the United States (passport or other accepted WHTI documents, depending on citizenship). Rules differ for U.S., Canadian, and third-country citizens.

  • Carry documents on your person, not buried in checked bags.
  • Allow extra schedule flexibility the same day you travel—do not book tight same-evening connections you cannot miss.
  • Customs/immigration can add time even when the railroad is running well.
  • If you are only riding a U.S. domestic segment (for example NYC–Albany or NYC–Saratoga), you still need to understand whether your train is the international consist and what station rules apply.

Check current Amtrak and government guidance before travel; requirements can change.

Station stop on the Amtrak Adirondack

From Moynihan Train Hall to Montreal Central Station, the Adirondack links two great cities with a full day of river and mountain scenery between them. Marty Bernard photo.

What to Expect Onboard

This is a comfortable regional/long-distance hybrid day train rather than a Superliner cruise. Seats are spacious by airline standards. The café car provides light meals and drinks. Wi-Fi may be available intermittently but should not be trusted for work-critical tasks, especially in rural stretches.

There is no Sightseer Lounge like the western long-distance fleet, so window seats matter. Bring food backups if you are particular—café selections are limited on a full-day ride.

Tips for the Best Experience

  • Reserve a window seat early, especially for foliage season.
  • Northbound: left side often favors Hudson River views; along Lake Champlain, views can favor different sides by milepost—move if seats open.
  • Pack patience for the border. Treat inspection time as part of the trip, not a delay to fight.
  • Fall color late September through mid-October is outstanding; book ahead.
  • Consider breaking the trip with a night in Albany, Saratoga Springs, or along Lake Champlain if a single long day feels too compressed.
  • Montreal arrival in the evening pairs well with a two-night city stay rather than a same-night turnaround.
  • Bring layers—air conditioning and outdoor station platforms vary widely with the seasons.

Related Railroad History

The route gathers pieces of the old Delaware & Hudson and related northeastern main lines that once tied New York to Canada with name trains and heavy freight. Today’s Adirondack is an Amtrak service, but the geography—Hudson corridor, Champlain valley, international gateway—is pure historic northeastern railroading.
