Westbound trains leave New York in the morning, pass through Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Charlottesville, and the Virginias, then continue via Cincinnati and Indianapolis into Chicago the following afternoon. Eastbound trains reverse the pattern, typically leaving Chicago in the late afternoon/evening.

Major intermediate stops include Washington, Charlottesville, Clifton Forge, White Sulphur Springs, Hinton, Charleston (W.Va.), Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and Lafayette. The train operates over a mix of host railroads, including CSX and former Chessie/B&O/C&O trackage that still defines the mountain character of the route.
