Georgetown Loop Railroad

Located just an hour from Denver, the Georgetown Loop offers a remarkable ride through the mountainous terrain between Georgetown and Silver Plume.

This 19th-century narrow-gauge railroad is renowned for its impressive engineering, including a historic loop that traverses elevated bridges and sharp switchbacks, offering exhilarating views to its passengers.  For Father’s Day, they hosts a special holiday weekend honoring dads and granddads.

More About The Railroad

The Georgetown Loop was originally constructed in 1884 as part of the Colorado Central Railroad network, designed to connect the once-prosperous mining towns of Georgetown and Silver Plume. The ambitious engineering project was notable for its steep grades, sharp curves, and the "loop" itself—a complex series of tracks and bridges that allowed trains to ascend nearly 600 feet over a distance of just four and a half miles. This engineering feat was achieved through the construction of the famous Devil's Gate High Bridge, a soaring iron trestle that remains one of the railway's most photographed features.

The railroad played a critical role in the silver boom of the late 1800s, facilitating the transport of silver ore and other goods from mountain mines to Denver and beyond. However, as the mining industry declined in the early 20th century, so too did the railroad's fortunes. The line was abandoned in 1938, but in the 1970s, a passionate group of preservationists recognized its historical significance and began efforts to restore the railroad to its former glory.

Today, the Georgetown Loop operates as a popular heritage railway, offering immersive train rides that provide passengers with stunning views of the mountainous landscape, dense forests, and the Clear Creek, which flows alongside parts of the route.

The train rides, which typically last about an hour and fifteen minutes, are an attraction for families, history buffs, and adventure seekers alike. The vintage steam engines and meticulously restored Victorian-era passenger cars evoke a sense of nostalgia, allowing riders to imagine what travel was like during Colorado's mining heyday.

In addition to its scenic and historical appeal, the Georgetown Loop offers a variety of special events and themed rides throughout the year. From holiday-themed rides such as the "Winter Holiday Train" during the winter season to the "Wild West Days", there's an option for nearly every kind of visitor. These events and experiences help to foster a greater appreciation for the railroad's historical legacy and the region's culture.

The Georgetown Loop is not only a testament to the ingenuity of 19th-century engineers but also a vibrant piece of living history that continues to delight and educate. Whether you're interested in the technical aspects of railway construction, the rich history of Colorado's mining towns, or simply the chance to enjoy stunning natural scenery, a trip aboard the Georgetown Loop Railroad offers a memorable journey back in time.

Final Thoughts

Father's Day trains offer a unique adventure but also provide a heartfelt way to create lasting memories with family.
