Smoky Valley Limited Dinner Train (2026): Abilene Dates, Tickets & What to Expect

Abilene’s Smoky Valley Limited is the seated-meal train on the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad: a two-hour round trip from the 1887 Rock Island Depot through the Smoky Hill River Valley to Enterprise, with dinner catered by area restaurants. 2026 dinner listings are typically Saturday evenings at 6:00 p.m. (some later-season trains at 5:00 p.m.). Published fares this year have run about $72–$110, with many Saturday dinners listed at $90.49 or $110. This is the dinner product. Murder-mystery nights are a different ticket.

About the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad
The all-volunteer nonprofit was founded in 1993 as a living-history museum. Trains run the old Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific between Abilene and Enterprise, about 10.4 miles one way. Boarding is at 200 SE 5th Street, the Rock Island depot (1887). Santa Fe 4-6-2 #3415 (Baldwin 1919) is the steam star on daytime Flint Hills Express trips; dinner trains are not guaranteed steam unless the railroad lists it for that date.
Two climate-controlled dining cars do the evening work: a 1946 Chicago & North Western luxury car and a 1902 Missouri-Kansas-Texas wooden daycoach rebuilt for tables. Meals come from Kansas caterers—beef, fried chicken, Italian, German/Oktoberfest, and rotating houses such as Broadway Station in Herington, Amanda’s Bakery, Murphy’s Kitchen, and Schatzi’s. Coffee, iced tea, or water is complimentary; beer, wine, and soft drinks are sold on board.

What the evening is like
Buy tickets in advance. Reservations for Saturday dinners often close the day before. The train leaves the depot on time. You ride to Enterprise, step off at the mill and store, then return to Abilene. Tables are in the dining cars. Theme nights (Italian, Oktoberfest, holiday dining, theater packages with Great Plains Theatre) share the same two-hour slot; the caterer and menu change with the date.
Murder-mystery and USO shows on the Limited are entertainment tickets on top of dinner, produced with Incahoots Entertainment on selected 2026 Saturdays. They are not the regular dinner product. Midland Railway’s Kansas Belle in Baldwin City is closed; do not plan a second Kansas dinner train there.

- Age / alcohol: Family dinners are the default; beer and wine for purchase. Mystery/USO nights follow the railroad’s posted age rules
- Murder-mystery dinner: one sentence on the Kansas mystery leaves—do not dump plots here
