During the height of the American Industrial Revolution, railroad tracks crisscrossed Connecticut, playing a pivotal role in its economic development. Today, revamped historic train lines offer a nostalgic glimpse into this bygone era. The essence of these trains has been revitalized with various themed excursions, and thus, the tea train ride was born.

The tradition of afternoon tea, rooted in 19th-century England, provides the perfect companion to Connecticut's historic train lines. The Experience

Currently the only heritage railroad hosting this experience is the Essex Steam Train & Riverboat. Known for its painstakingly restored cars and authentic steam engine, this railroad melds history with stunning views along the Connecticut River.

"A Summer Afternoon Tea" is hosted by the railroad on select dates in August offering guests a  Strawberry Prosecco before boarding followed by a selection of teas from Harney and Son’s during an excursion that lasts about 1 1/2 hours.

The Essex Steam Train is a unique and historic attraction located in Essex, Connecticut, offering a picturesque journey through the scenic Connecticut River Valley. Operated by the Valley Railroad Company since 1971, this excursion seamlessly combines a vintage steam train ride with a relaxing riverboat cruise.

Passengers begin their adventure aboard a restored steam locomotive, chugging along a 12-mile round trip that winds through serene landscapes, charming small towns, and lush forests. The train ride provides glimpses of diverse wildlife, including nesting bald eagles, making it a delightful experience for nature enthusiasts.

At Deep River Landing, the journey transitions to the Becky Thatcher, a Mississippi-style riverboat. This one-hour cruise along the Connecticut River is a serene exploration, showcasing more of the region's abundant natural beauty and historic landmarks like Gillette Castle and the Goodspeed Opera House.

The train offers several special events throughout the year, including themed excursions like the North Pole Express during the holiday season and fall foliage tours, enhancing the visitor experience.
