Canadian National (CN) announced today the launch of its America250 celebration, unveiling two specially painted locomotives that will operate across the railroad’s U.S. network in tribute to the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence in 2026.
The commemorative units—numbered CN 1776 and CN 2026—were introduced during a March 4 announcement from the railroad’s U.S. headquarters in Homewood, Illinois. According to CN, the locomotives symbolize the “dual pillars of the American story: independence and innovation,” and will travel widely across the company’s American operations throughout 2026.
Canadian National 1776, “Screaming Eagle”Both locomotives feature striking custom designs that celebrate iconic American imagery and themes associated with the nation’s founding and technological progress.
CN 1776, the first unit, carries a bold patriotic design centered around a “Screaming Eagle” motif. The bald eagle—long recognized as a symbol of American freedom, sovereignty, and resilience—dominates the locomotive’s livery. CN officials noted the design reflects the ideals of courage, sacrifice, and commitment historically associated with the symbol, particularly within U.S. military traditions.
The second locomotive, CN 2026, draws inspiration from the iconic paint scheme of Air Force One, the aircraft used by the President of the United States. The streamlined design highlights themes of engineering innovation, precision, and national leadership, underscoring the connection between transportation technology and economic strength.
Together, the locomotives serve as moving tributes to the nation’s history while highlighting the role of rail transportation in America’s continued development.
Canadian National 2026, “Air Force One”CN stated that both locomotives will enter service immediately, operating across the railroad’s extensive U.S. network during 2026. The company’s American footprint stretches from the Gulf Coast through the Midwest and into the Great Lakes region, ensuring the commemorative locomotives will be seen by communities and rail enthusiasts across a broad portion of the country.
As they move from terminal to terminal hauling freight, the locomotives will also act as ambassadors for the nationwide America250 celebration, which marks the semiquincentennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
In announcing the initiative, CN emphasized its longstanding ties to the United States and the importance of its American operations. The railroad noted that its activities support more than 25,000 jobs across the United States, contribute approximately $4.1 billion to U.S. gross domestic product, and generate roughly $1.7 billion in tax revenues.
CN President and Chief Executive Officer Tracy Robinson said the anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the country’s founding ideals and the innovations that continue to shape its future.
The railroad also highlighted the historic importance of railroads themselves in the nation’s development. From connecting agricultural regions to industrial centers to supporting global trade, rail transportation has been central to economic growth since the 19th century.
Specially painted locomotives commemorating historic events have become increasingly common among North American railroads. These units—often called heritage or commemorative locomotives—serve as mobile public-relations platforms while celebrating important historical themes or railroad milestones.
CN’s America250 locomotives join a growing number of commemorative units appearing across the industry as the 2026 anniversary approaches. Their designs reflect both patriotic symbolism and the technological achievements that have defined transportation in the United States.
Throughout 2026, CN expects the locomotives to appear on freight trains moving across its U.S. system, offering railroad employees, customers, and enthusiasts the opportunity to witness the special units in service.
By pairing historical symbolism with modern rail operations, CN’s America250 locomotives transform everyday freight movements into rolling reminders of the nation’s history—celebrating both the founding of the United States and the enduring role railroads continue to play in its economic life.
