The Boston & Maine Railroad (B&M) operated one of New England’s most varied steam locomotive rosters from the late 19th century until the mid-1950s. At its peak in the early 20th century, the B&M rostered hundreds of steam engines tailored to the region’s dense passenger traffic, commuter services, and challenging secondary lines with tight curves and grades. The fleet emphasized reliable, versatile power rather than massive mainline locomotives, relying heavily on builders like American Locomotive Company (ALCO) subsidiaries—Manchester, Schenectady, and Brooks—with additional units from Baldwin and later Lima.
Boston & Maine 2-6-0 #1402 (Class B-15b) leads a local freight southbound out of Peterborough, New Hampshire on the morning of January 8, 1956. Steven Payne photo.Switchers formed the backbone of yard and local work. The G-class 0-6-0s (e.g., G-10 200–309 built 1903–1910 by Manchester; G-11a 400–429, 1911–1913) and G-11b 430–452 (Brooks, 1916) handled industrial trackage. Heavier 0-8-0s included H-2a USRA copies (610–631, Alco 1922) and H-3 series (Baldwin and Alco, 1928–1929) for bigger yard jobs. These compact engines, with 52-inch drivers and modest cylinder sizes, excelled in tight clearances.
For road service, the B-15/B-15a 2-6-0 Moguls dominated. Roughly 140 units (1360–1499, Manchester ALCO 1903–1910) provided flexible power for mixed trains and locals. Many received superheaters later, extending their lives into the 1950s. The K-class 2-8-0 Consolidations offered more muscle: K-7 (2360–2429, Alco 1905–1911), K-8b (2640–2709, Baldwin 1913), and K-8c (2710–2734, Brooks 1916) hauled freight across the system with 61-inch drivers and 24x30-inch cylinders in later variants.
Passenger and fast freight duties fell to 4-4-0 Americans (A-41f series, Manchester 1909–1911), 4-4-2 Atlantics (J-1b 3220–3244, 1908–1909), and especially 4-6-2 Pacifics. The P-1 through P-2 series (Alco, 1910–1913) featured 73-inch drivers; the pinnacle came with the elegant P-4a/b heavy Pacifics (3710–3719, Lima 1934 and 1937) boasting 80-inch drivers, 260 psi boilers, and striking names like Constitution (3713, the sole survivor, preserved). These handled named trains such as the Minute Man.
Freight power included 2-10-2 Santa Fe types (S-1a/b, Alco 1920–1923, 3000–3029) for heavy drags and 25 Lima 2-8-4 Berkshires (T-1a/b, 1928–1929). The final steam order comprised 18 Baldwin 4-8-2 Mountains (R-1a–d, 1935–1941) with large 73-inch drivers and high-capacity tenders for fast freight and passenger work.
B&M steam peaked with dark green livery and gold lettering before shifting to experimental schemes. Postwar dieselization accelerated retirements; most steam vanished by 1955–1957, with the last active engines scrapped shortly after. A few units found second lives or preservation, such as 0-6-0 No. 410 in Lowell, Massachusetts. The roster reflected the B&M’s adaptation to regional demands until the diesel era fully supplanted it.
