Missouri "Father's Day" Train Rides
Published: May 27, 2026
By: Adam Burns
Father’s Day is a perfect occasion to show appreciation for the cherished men in our lives who have supported and guided us. If you're looking for a unique way to honor your dad this year, why not consider a scenic and historical train ride?
Missouri, with its rich railroad heritage and beautiful landscapes, offers several train excursions that cater to families seeking a relaxing yet memorable experience. However, only one hosts an event celebrating dad, the St. Louis Iron Mountain & Southern Railway. More about this experience is detailed below.
St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern's preserved Pennsylvania E8A, #5898, typically leads its excursions.
St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern Railway
For a nostalgic trip back in time, the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern Railway (StLIM&S) - typically shortened to just the Iron Mountain Railway today - is a great choice. Located in Jackson, Missouri, this railroad offers themed train rides that are perfect for Father’s Day celebrations.
- A Touch of History: Enjoy a leisurely journey on a train that resembles those from the late 19th century. With open-air and enclosed seating options, passengers can enjoy different views and a relaxing atmosphere.
- Father’s Day Features: During Father's Day weekend the railroad makes a point to celebrate dad and hosts the popular "Iron Mountain James Gang Robbery" experience.
More About The Railroad
The Historic StLIM&S
The StLIM&S is an intriguing chapter in the history of American railroading. Established during the era of rapid industrial growth and westward expansion in the United States, the railway played a significant role in connecting various regions, facilitating commerce, and shaping the communities along its route.
The origins of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern can be traced back to its incorporation in 1851. The primary aim was to link St. Louis, Missouri, a burgeoning industrial hub, with southeastern Missouri’s rich iron ore deposits, particularly those in Iron Mountain. As one of the earlier railroads, the StLIM&S was instrumental in supporting the mining and timber industries by providing a reliable mode of transportation for raw materials and finished goods.
The construction of the railroad was notably challenging due to the rugged terrain in the Ozark Mountains, characterized by dense forests and steep grades. Despite these obstacles, the railway's expansion was steady, albeit punctuated by the tumultuous events of the American Civil War.
During the war, the railroad suffered infrastructure damage and disruptions, but its strategic importance as a transportation route for both military and civilian purposes led to its rapid recovery and continued growth after the war.
Post-Civil War, the StLIM&S became part of a larger transportation network, crucially contributing to the economic development of the southern and midwestern United States. It provided a vital connection between the Gulf Coast, particularly New Orleans, and the industrial centers of the North, allowing for the efficient movement of agricultural products, coal, and other commodities.
Financial challenges, management changes, and competition were consistent themes in the railroad’s history. Throughout its operational life, the StLIM&S underwent several reorganizations and mergers, reflecting the broader trend of consolidation in the rail industry during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Eventually, it was absorbed into the Missouri Pacific Railroad, a major development that marked the end of its existence as an independent entity but also ensured the continuity of its routes and services under new leadership.
In addition to its economic contributions, the StLIM&S had a cultural impact on the regions it served. The towns and communities along the route often owed their growth and prosperity to the railroad, which provided not just a means of economic livelihood but also a connection to the wider world. Railroads like the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern were pivotal in shaping the American landscape, facilitating migration, and exchanging ideas.
Today's Heritage Railroad
Established primarily as a tourist attraction, the present day St. Louis Iron Mountain & Southern provides unique train excursions that appeal to families, history enthusiasts, and anyone fascinated by classic train travel. The railroad currently operates on about 6 miles of ex-Missouri Pacific trackage running south of Jackson.
Passengers embark on themed excursions aboard vintage railcars, experiencing a leisurely journey through the scenic landscapes of Southeast Missouri. The railway hosts a variety of events, including mystery dinner trains, holiday-themed rides, and special events like the "Santa Express" and "Pumpkin Patch Trains" catering to diverse audiences and creating engaging experiences for visitors of all ages.
Missouri's rich railroad history and scenic landscapes make it an excellent place for a Father’s Day train ride. Whether you and your dad are seeking a short nostalgic trip on a vintage railway or a longer adventure aboard a modern train, the state offers a variety of options to fit your needs. Make sure to plan ahead, as these popular events can sell out quickly.
