West Virginia 'Wild West' Train Rides
Published: May 27, 2026
By: Adam Burns
Nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, West Virginia isn’t just about breathtaking vistas and rustic charm. It’s a state where history whispers and echoes through the undulating hills and deep forests. While many associate the Wild West with states further afield, West Virginia offers its own unique spin on the era, particularly through its captivating train rides that transport visitors back to a time when locomotives ruled the land.
The Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad is a modern scenic-railway success story built around classic Appalachian railroading: steep grades, tight curves, big timber-and-coal country scenery, and small towns that still feel like railroads matter. While D&GV is known for several different excursions across the region, one of the most entertaining rides on its calendar is the Greenbrier Express Wild West Special—a steam-powered day trip that pairs a gorgeous river valley run with a full-on Old West takeover in the mountain town of Durbin.

Overview
The D&GV umbrella connects visitors with train rides that showcase “real West Virginia”—not just a short museum loop, but lengthy mainline-style trips through wilderness scenery. The Greenbrier Express is a perfect example: it departs from Cass, West Virginia, then follows the Greenbrier River corridor toward Durbin, delivering a full day that feels equal parts scenic journey and small-town event.
For railfans, the appeal is obvious: Cass is synonymous with historic mountain railroading, and the Greenbrier Express is marketed as a steam-powered excursion on Wild West Special dates. For families and casual travelers, the draw is that you’re not just riding a train—you’re riding to a destination where something is happening.
The Route
The Greenbrier River is one of those waterways that seems purpose-built for a passenger train: long, photogenic curves, clear water, forested slopes, and frequent “only-by-rail-or-river” views that make the trip feel remote without being inaccessible. The D&GV highlights that the train closely follows the Greenbrier River from Cass to Durbin, making the scenery a constant companion rather than an occasional cameo.
That matters, because the Wild West Special isn’t just a themed show layered onto a ride—the underlying trip is already a strong scenic excursion. Even if you did nothing in Durbin but stretch your legs and watch the river slide past town, it would still be a satisfying rail day.
About The Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad
One of West Virginia’s most popular attractions for those looking to experience the romance of train travel is the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley. Known for its diverse range of excursions, this railroad offers many options for exploring the area's natural beauty and history.
The Durbin Rocket offers a special journey in a vintage steam locomotive, winding through the serene Monongahela National Forest. This five-hour round trip provides scenic views of the mountains and rivers that dot the landscape, while the vintage coach cars evoke the nostalgia of a time when train rides were an adventure of their own.
Adding to the experience is the Castaway Caboose, a unique overnight adventure. Passengers are dropped off in a personal caboose, providing an immersive experience in the wilderness – a true step into the Wild West, where passengers are left to explore and enjoy nature before being picked up the next day.
Reenactment and Adventure
On Wild West Special weekends, the Greenbrier Express turns into the transportation hub for a larger community-style event—often promoted as “Wild West Weekend.” The basic idea is simple and wonderfully old-fashioned: you ride steam power into Durbin, and then a cast of western characters brings the town (and the train) to life with staged action, photo ops, and crowd-pleasing theatrics. Mountain Rail WV describes it as a chance to ride from Cass to Durbin and return while western characters “take over the train.”
If you’ve ever wished your scenic train ride had a little more “story,” this is the one that leans all the way in.
2026 dates, tickets, and what’s included
Because themed trains can sell out quickly, it helps to know the basics before you plan. Mountain Rail WV lists the Wild West Weekend return dates as July 31, August 1, and August 2, 2026, with tickets on sale.
One nice feature: a cold cut lunch is included per ticket for the Wild West Special.
Published prices (at the time of listing) include:
-
Adult (12–64): $85
-
Senior (65+): $83
-
Military/Veteran: $81
-
Child (4–11): $65
-
Infant (3 & under): free (ticket required)
Even on standard Greenbrier Express runs, Mountain Rail WV notes that on arrival in Durbin, all ticket holders are served lunch (either on the car, in the depot, or at nearby Main Street restaurants by the depot). The Wild West Special builds on that “ride + lunch + town time” rhythm with the added entertainment layer.
The Wild West Special
1) Morning departure from Cass
You board in Cass, settle into your seat, and let steam-era railroading set the pace. Early on, everyone’s watching for the first long river views and the moments when the train seems to glide into total quiet except for the mechanical music of the locomotive and wheels.
2) The run down the Greenbrier River to Durbin
This is where the Greenbrier Express earns its name. The river stays close, the mountains keep you boxed in, and you get that “moving postcard” effect that’s hard to replicate from a highway.
3) Durbin arrival: lunch + Wild West action
Durbin is where the themed portion takes center stage. Wild West Weekend listings describe staged scenarios including a bank robbery and gunfight re-enactment, creating the feeling that you’ve stepped into a living-history-style street scene—only with a steam train sitting right there as part of the backdrop.
4) Return trip to Cass
As the show winds down, you reboard for the ride back. It’s often the most relaxed part of the day—everyone’s swapping photos, kids are replaying the “dramatic moments,” and railfans are happy because (let’s be honest) any return run behind steam has its own magic.
