All Aboard the Freedom Train: Heber Valley Railroad’s Patriotic Independence Day Excursion
Every July, as America celebrates its birthday, the Heber Valley Railroad in Heber City, Utah, rolls out a special tradition: the Freedom Train. This patriotic 90-minute round-trip excursion to Decker Bay combines scenic beauty, live music, and red-white-and-blue spirit in a rolling tribute to Independence Day. In 2026, the event carries extra significance as part of the nationwide America 250! celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Whether you’re a history buff, a railfan, or just looking for a memorable family outing, the Freedom Train offers a perfect blend of nostalgia and celebration. Here’s everything you need to know about this beloved Utah tradition.

A Living Piece of Utah Railroad History
The Heber Valley Railroad—affectionately known for decades as the “Heber Creeper”—traces its roots to 1899. That year, the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railway completed a branch line through Provo Canyon to serve the agricultural heart of the Heber Valley. The first train arrived in Heber on September 21, 1899, greeted with fanfare and a ceremonial last-spike driving at the new wooden depot. For much of the 20th century, the line hauled freight (hay, sheep, cattle, lumber, and milk) and passengers along the twisting canyon route. Residents nicknamed it the “Creeper” because the slow, scenic crawl through the narrow canyon felt delightfully leisurely.
By the late 1960s, rising truck traffic and declining freight led the Rio Grande to abandon the line. Local enthusiasts saved it in 1970, operating seasonal tourist trains as the Wasatch Mountain Railway (still called the Heber Creeper). In 1992, the Utah State Legislature created the Heber Valley Historic Railroad Authority, restoring the railroad as a state-supported attraction focused on tourism, education, and historic equipment preservation.
Today, the railroad operates as an independent agency of the State of Utah on roughly 15–20 miles of track (depending on the route). Vintage coaches—many restored with period details—offer heated comfort in winter, restrooms, a snack car, and a gift shop. Most excursions are powered by diesel-electric locomotives, though the railroad is actively restoring its historic 1907 Baldwin steam locomotive No. 618. The route hugs the shores of scenic Deer Creek Reservoir, winds along the Provo River, and cuts through lush valley floor and steep, forested canyon sections—some of the most picturesque railroading in the Wasatch Mountains.
What to Expect on the Freedom Train
The Freedom Train is one of the railroad’s flagship patriotic events. It’s a 90-minute round-trip from the Heber City depot at 450 South 600 West to Decker Bay (a scenic lakeside destination on Deer Creek Reservoir). Onboard, passengers enjoy live patriotic music and an festive atmosphere designed to spark Independence Day pride.
Key highlights include:
- Patriotic theme: Dress in red, white, and blue—many passengers do, creating a sea of stars-and-stripes on every trip.
- Veterans and active-duty appreciation: Active-duty military personnel, veterans, and their immediate families ride free in General Admission coaches (call the ticket office for details and verification).
- Onboard amenities: A concession car sells food and snacks. Comfortable seating in historic coaches makes it family-friendly and relaxing.
- Scenic views: Passengers soak in sweeping views of Deer Creek Reservoir, the Wasatch Mountains, and Provo Canyon—especially beautiful in early July.
In 2026, the Freedom Train doubles as an America 250! celebration, adding extra historical flair to the already festive rides.

Wheelchair access is limited due to the historic equipment; call ahead for accommodations. The railroad notes that occasional maintenance may require swapping cars, but they strive to honor ticketed class of service.
Why Ride the Freedom Train?
In a world of theme parks and digital entertainment, the Heber Valley Railroad offers something timeless: a chance to slow down, enjoy stunning mountain scenery, and celebrate American heritage the old-fashioned way—on the rails. The Freedom Train isn’t just a train ride; it’s a moving salute to the pioneers who built the West, the veterans who defended it, and the families who continue to cherish its stories.
Whether you’re waving a flag from your seat, singing along to patriotic tunes, or simply watching the lake sparkle under the summer sun, the Freedom Train delivers pure, wholesome fun with a side of history.
