But in 2026—the nation’s 250th anniversary—there’s a charming, traffic-free way to join the celebration: the Independence Day Flyer, a festive round-trip train excursion operated by the Green Mountain Railroad (part of the Vermont Rail System’s passenger services).
This special holiday train lets passengers skip the parking hassles and highway crowds, relaxing in vintage-style railcars while enjoying the rolling Champlain Valley countryside en route to the fireworks. It’s a nostalgic throwback to classic rail travel, perfect for families, couples, and anyone who loves a patriotic adventure on the rails.

The Independence Day Flyer runs just once on Friday, July 3, 2026 (the evening before the traditional Fourth of July, aligning perfectly with Burlington’s fireworks schedule). The full experience lasts about six hours, including a generous three-hour layover in Burlington so riders can explore the waterfront festivities.

- Boarding begins: 5:30 p.m. at the Ferrisburgh/Vergennes Amtrak Station (49 Park Lane, Ferrisburgh, VT 05456)
- Train departs Vergennes: 6:00 p.m.
- Arrives Burlington: 7:15 p.m. (1 hour 15 minutes travel time)
- Layover in Burlington: 3 hours (passengers must disembark and cannot leave items on the train)
- Boarding for return begins: 10:00 p.m. in Burlington
- Train departs Burlington: 10:30 p.m.
- Arrives back in Vergennes: 11:15 p.m. (1 hour 15 minutes return trip)
The route is a direct, nonstop round-trip between Vergennes and Burlington—no intermediate stops—making it an efficient and relaxing way to reach the heart of the celebration.

- Children under 2: Ride free on a parent’s lap.
