A Nostalgic 4th of July at Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad: Ice Cream, Trains, and Small-Town Patriotism in Flint
Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad, a Genesee County Parks gem, turns back the clock to the late 1800s with its collection of historic buildings and authentic narrow-gauge railroad. Each year on Independence Day, the village comes alive with a special celebration that blends patriotism, family fun, and old-fashioned charm.
On July 4, 2026, from 11 AM to 5 PM, visitors can enjoy a full day of activities including a classic ice cream social at 1 PM, live music, games and prizes for kids, and plenty of opportunities to explore the 34 historic structures that make up the village. Optional train rides on the Huckleberry Railroad offer scenic views while the village itself hosts crafts, shops, and traditional programming in a red-white-and-blue atmosphere.
Whether you’re making cards for veterans, playing vintage games, or simply soaking in the patriotic displays while enjoying a cone of ice cream, the event captures the spirit of a simpler time. As part of the site’s 50th anniversary celebrations in 2026, this year’s Independence Day event promises to be especially memorable.
Admission options include village-only or village + train ride tickets, with pricing varying by age. The village is located at 6140 Bray Road in Flint and operates Thursdays–Sundays and holidays throughout the summer season. For the latest details and ticket information, visit the official Genesee County Parks website or their Facebook page. It’s the perfect way to celebrate America’s birthday with history, community, and a scoop of old-fashioned fun.
Alaska Railroad 4-6-0 #152 which has led excursions along the Huckleberry while Rio Grande 2-8-2 #464 continues its overhaul. The Ten-wheeler was built in 1920 by Baldwin.
Independence Day Celebration Highlights
Expect a patriotic, old-fashioned day filled with:
- Classic Ice Cream Social — Usually around 1 PM, with sweet treats to cool off and make memories.
- Games, prizes, and family activities — Old-fashioned games for kids, midway-style fun, face painting, and more.
- Live music and entertainment — Patriotic performances and activities throughout the day.
- Historic village exploration — Wander through 30+ preserved or replica structures from the turn of the last century, browse shops and crafts, and enjoy traditional Americana programming.
- Huckleberry Railroad rides — Optional scenic 40-minute narrow-gauge steam (or diesel) train rides through the countryside (combo tickets available).
- Patriotic touches — Red, white, and blue décor, flag-related activities, and a strong sense of history and community. Past events have included card-making for veterans and other heartfelt touches.
The event emphasizes family fun in a living-history setting, making it a relaxed, wholesome alternative to larger fireworks-heavy celebrations.
About The Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad
Nestled at 6140 Bray Road in Flint, Michigan, Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad is a living-history museum operated by Genesee County Parks. It recreates the look and feel of a Great Lakes town from the turn of the 20th century. With more than 34 historic structures—some original buildings relocated and meticulously restored, others faithful replicas—the village offers an immersive step back in time to the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The idea for Crossroads Village began in the 1970s as part of a broader plan for a Flint River recreational area and farm museum. It officially opened to the public on July 4, 1976, during America’s Bicentennial celebrations. In 2026 the site proudly marks its 50th anniversary under the theme “50 Years. One Village. Countless Memories,” celebrating five decades of preserving local heritage while creating new family traditions.
Visitors strolling the dirt roads and wooden boardwalks encounter a vibrant community of historic buildings. Highlights include the restored Davison Depot, an authentic late-19th-century Grand Trunk Railroad station that once served as a “flag stop.” Other structures house period shops, homes, a schoolhouse, church, and workshops where skilled artisans and interpreters demonstrate traditional trades such as blacksmithing, carpentry, and crafting.
The Colwell Opera House hosts live performances, while the historic 1912 C.W. Parker carousel and matching 1910 Superior Wheel provide old-fashioned amusement rides. A full-size paddlewheel riverboat, the Genesee Bell, offers tours on Mott Lake. Community partners like the Friends of Crossroads Village Carousel, the Mid-Michigan Railway Historical Society, the Genesee County Herb Society, and MSU Master Gardeners enhance the educational experience through horticulture displays and hands-on programs.
At the heart of the village lies the Huckleberry Railroad, a three-foot narrow-gauge line that takes its name from the original railroad’s leisurely pace—passengers could supposedly hop off to pick huckleberries and catch the next train. The route follows a historic segment of the old Flint & Pere Marquette Railroad, which dates back to 1857 and once stretched 19.5 miles from Flint to Fostoria. Today the scenic 40-minute round-trip journey winds along the shores of Mott Lake and through wooded countryside before returning to the village.
The railroad operates a charming fleet of 11 original and replica wooden coaches plus a classic red caboose. Motive power alternates between the coal-fired Baldwin 4-6-0 steam locomotive #152 (Fridays–Sundays) and a rebuilt diesel Engine #12 (Thursdays and Fridays). The authentic steam experience, complete with the whistle and rhythmic chug, is often the highlight of any visit.
Together, Crossroads Village and the Huckleberry Railroad create a unique blend of education, entertainment, and nostalgia. Families, history buffs, and railroad enthusiasts alike can explore a simpler era while enjoying a genuine slice of Michigan’s transportation and community heritage.
