Kansas City, Missouri - Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) today officially unveiled a striking new commemorative locomotive, KCS 1776, a specially painted Tier 4 ET44AC designed to celebrate the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026. The locomotive represents one of the railroad industry’s first major tributes marking the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration.
According to CPKC’s official announcement released Tuesday, the locomotive was introduced as part of nationwide preparations recognizing the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The railroad described the unit as both a celebration of American history and a recognition of freight rail’s enduring role in building and connecting the nation.

The patriotic design incorporates numerous symbolic elements tied directly to American history, including:
CPKC President and CEO Keith Creel, a U.S. Army veteran, noted that the locomotive honors both the nation’s heritage and the thousands of railroaders working across the company’s American network today. The railroad employs roughly one-third of its workforce in the United States, operating across 19 states from the Upper Midwest to the Gulf Coast and Northeast.
The unveiling underscores freight railroads’ historic contribution to American economic expansion. From the early industrial era through modern global supply chains, rail transportation has remained central to national growth — a theme emphasized by America250 officials participating in the announcement.
Jen Condon, Executive Vice President of America250, stated that the anniversary offers an opportunity to reflect on industries that helped shape the country, highlighting railroads as a vital force behind commerce, settlement, and industrial development.
CPKC itself traces portions of its U.S. heritage to some of the earliest eras of American railroading, including lines descended from the Delaware & Hudson and the late-19th-century Kansas City rail expansion led by entrepreneur Arthur E. Stilwell.
While historic in appearance, KCS 1776 represents the latest generation of freight locomotive technology. The ET44AC platform is part of Wabtec’s Evolution Series family, producing approximately 4,400 horsepower and meeting stringent EPA Tier 4 emissions standards, significantly reducing nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions compared with earlier locomotive designs.
These locomotives form a key component of CPKC’s broader fleet modernization strategy, improving fuel efficiency, reliability, and environmental performance across its North American operations.
As the first unit in a planned commemorative fleet, KCS 1776 is expected to operate systemwide across CPKC’s U.S. network, serving as a moving tribute ahead of next year’s historic anniversary. Rail enthusiasts and communities along the railroad’s routes will likely see the locomotive leading freight trains throughout 2026 and beyond.
The debut continues a longstanding railroad tradition of special heritage and commemorative paint schemes — but few have marked an occasion as significant as the United States’ 250th birthday.
With preparations for America250 accelerating nationwide, KCS 1776 now joins those celebrations as a highly visible symbol of how railroads — past, present, and future — remain intertwined with the American story.
